They lobbied, they protested, and they lectured until people listened to them (or at least gave them what they wanted).

The "Temperance Movement" got Prohibition passed, and that was big in US society. It led to the rise of organized crime and a secret subculture.

Same for the Sufragists, feminists, consumers etc. There are many examples all you have to do is some research.
