If you are having trouble getting this to work, as the other said it could be a firewall issue. Use of a router with a hardware firewall can interfere in some applications and game. You most likely also have a software firewall on your system, and it may also be blocking your ability to play LAN games.

In your router there are ways to configure ports, both automatically by selecting items from a list, and manually if it is not on the list and you have the port information you need to make the configurations.

In order to configure this in the router, you need to access the routers configuration pages. You didn't state which router you use, so I have to guess at the IP address you enter in order to access your configuration pages.

If it is a Linksys or a Dlink, you use 192.168.1.1 and many others use this IP address too.

If you use a Belkin router it is: 192.168.2.1

Look in your routers manual for your particular IP address, or you can locate it by examining your network configurations by right clicking on your network icon in the notification area, and then clicking on Status. On the Status page, click the Support tab. On the Support tab locate your Default Gateway address, that is your router's configuration IP address. Write it down.

Now, open a browser session, and type that address into the top URL address box, not the Google or Live Search, the main Search box at the top. Hit Enter and your configuration pages will appear.

Now, while using these pages there is often a "time out" period, which is 10 minutes unless you or somebody else has changed it. This means that after you login to the pages, after 10 minutes of inactivity it will automatically log you out, and you will need to log back in to continue configurations.

Now, look to the left side of the screen and you will see a list of options. look under the Firewall lable, and then look for anything with Virtual in it. Click on that Virtual link.

What appears is a page where you can forward ports in your router to allow different apps or games to pass so they can be used successfully. At the top is a drop down button which when pressed offers a list of apps and games. If your is on it, select it and then hit Add. This automatically configures this for you in the Router. Make sure you click Submit, or Apply, whichever button is used in your router to make the changes.

Now, if your game or app is not in this list, you can go to the website here:

http://www.portforward.com/default.htm

This website offeres free help on opening ports in your router in order to get apps and games to work properly. Read up on Port Forwarding, it is not long, then locate your router from the router list page, then click on the app or game you wish to configure. Follow the instructions. It is not difficult.

Now, this page states that you *have* to create a Static IP address, but this is not neccasarily true. When you use your routers list, it does not create a Static IP for the computer which is using that game or app. So, just use the settings they offer, the ports, and then take those to your routers Virtual Servers configuration pages, and enter the information manually. Only setup an Static IP if after you do this manual configuration it still does not work.

Please note that before you setup a Static IP please look to your software firewall for blocking issues there. You may need to also manually add this to your software firewalls Allow list, and then select In and Out for passing in and out of the firewall. Most programs only need one or the other, but some to require both incoming and outgoing permissions, such as IM Messengers, e-mail programs, browsers, etc. Only a few need incoming and outgoing permissions, but I do think this would probably need both.

In order to manually add a program for permission to pass through the firewall, you go to your firewalls permissions area, then click on Add. When the Add Wizard opens, click on Browse, and the browse to the Program Files area, locate the executable of your app and then click Open. One you do this you will simply need to check the default settings offered you, and then make sure that both outgoing and incoming is allowed, and both TCP and UDP are both listed, and if you do not need to go onto the Internet with this app, you can ensrue it only accesses the LAN, by clicking on the radial button in front of LAN, or if you wish to allow Internet access, click on the option which allows ALL, or Internet or whatever setting it is in your particular firewall.

Good luck, have a nice day and a happy holiday season. Enjoy your games!

Most multiplayer games have a LAN setting in Multiplayer.

Only problem that could come up would be Firewall or Ports not configured.

Your manual should have that.

One important item is to NOT start the game as dedicated as then YOUR computer could not the game.
