Hey everyone,

I am living and studyin in Malaysia. There are these two different colleges with American degree programmes here.

One of them is cooperating with Southern New Hamshire University, the other one is cooperating with Upper Iowa University. I cant be sure which university provides better programme or which one of them is more recognisable(?)

i am thinking to take business studies or Communication. Never lived in USA so please advise me which university would be a better choice.

Thank you !!

Southern New Hampshire is recognized as a school that specializes in business; Upper Iowa has a broader range of academic offerings.

That said, first poster is right. Neither school's name carries much prestige in the States outside their own local areas.

Niether school is particularly good.
Southern New Hampshire is a slightly better choice.

Southern New Hampshire is listed by US News as "Less Selective" and is a third tier regional school in the East. Schools in this range will accept most students, do not attract strong students and are not very highly regarded by employers in the US.

Upper Iowa is ranked even lower. US News ranks it as a fourth tier regional university that is less selective in choosing its students. Given that there are fewer universities in the middle of the US, this ranking is about as low as you can possibly go and not be a diploma mill.

There are a couple of other things that you should consider.

Upper Iowa is in the middle of nowhere. Iowa is a farming state in the Great Plains -- a part of the US that is extremely flat. The nearest cities are Des Moines (three hours away), Minneapolis, MN (four hours away) and Chicago (five hours away). Winters in Iowa are brutally cold. It is a private Women;'s college with about 5,000 students.

Southern New Hampshire is an even smaller private school (1700 students). But it is in a suburban setting. Manchester is not a large city -- but is the largest city in New Hampshire. New Hampshire is a beautiful state. The winters are cold -- but the mountains are close -- if you like to ski. It is also about 40 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, and less than an hour away from Boston, MA.

Ignore the other comments, since they are mostly incorrect.

Southern New Hampshire (SNHU) is a well respected school throughout the United States. SNHU is a tier-1 (high ranking) University. Yes, they are known for their business majors, however, they offer a very good math major and their IT programs are getting better.

I would definitely pick SNHU over Upper Iowa University. It's not even a contest.

Neither of them are particulary prestigious or good schools here, but if you have to pick...Let me give you the statistics because statistics speak loud and clear:

Southern New Hampshire:
average GPA: 2.97
SAT: 1420-1690

Upper Iowa:
average GPA: 2.71

I would go with Southern New Hampshire, it's also a better location. Iowa is a boring place and culturally dead. Coming from another country, New Hampshire would be better.
