Except Bette Davis when Joan Crawford died! Bette said, "You should only speak good of the dead. She's dead. Good."

I've thought the same thing. It's too bad people can't somehow see their own funerals and hear all the kind things people say, after they're gone.
On the other hand, I had a neighbor who was one of the nastiest, crankiest people I've ever met. When he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, I had some guilt that I never got to know or understand him. I told a friend that and she said, "Just because he's dying doesn't make him a saint or even a nice guy. The guy didn't WANT friends and he IS a jerk." I realized she's right. Just because someone has died or is dying doesn't take away the negative things that person has done.

Dr W has it right. I knew of a man that worked with young boys all his adult life, and it was always rumored that he had molested a few of them. When he died, alot of people were glad, especially the ones who had endured his abuse. But, the pastor gave a sermon like he was the greatest man that ever walked the earth.I don't like how a complete stranger can deliver such a ridiculous eulogy for someone they do not know.

Once I had an uncle over at our home and he was talking about a deceased fellow. He was saying something bad about this man. My grandmother told him not to talk about the man like that because he was dead. Then, my uncle told her "Hell, I didn't say anything good about the son of a b!itch when he was alive, I'm certainly not going to start now." Merry Christmas. 2D

Marcus Antonius didn't think so.... Or was it sarcasm?

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar.

Julius Caesar Act 3, scene 2, 74–77

It is partly due to people not appreciating others and actually taking the time from their busy lives to thank people. Most people are not self reflecting, they are in fact quite self centered and inconsiderate. We often do not miss others and speak well of others until it is too late. Why? Simply b/c we do not appreciate others presence in our lives and gift of time/memories they have shared with us during the brief times we interact with them.

What you described is only human nature. The death of someone we know bring us to the reality that we are all going to die someday. Remember that man is the only animal on this planet that knows he is mortal and the time and place of execution is unknown.

When some one dies, just what bad can you say about them -- I can guarantee they did absolutely nothing bad after they died ---maybe they could walk on water, if they could walk.

I personally know several people who are/were well thought of and spoken of whether alive or dead. I guess I just am lucky enough to know some good people.
