Some older people do become paranoid about the water bills, so they don't wash their clothes often enough. Also I think they can get scared of falling in the bath / shower, so personal hygiene can be a little neglected. And the housework gets too much for them, so dust collects around the house. And they get frugal and keep food a little longer than they should, so as not to waste it...so you get that old food smell. That odour that you are describing, is a combination of all these things.

LOL.....I know exactly what you mean! From looking around at my grand parents house and see all the OLD things they have not replaced in years, like furniture and old collectables they have. It all gets an smell over time! They also don't "air out" the place as often because they are always cold!

It is probably the older books and woods that are in their homes.Saving things holds in the smell.I don't think the frail aged can open up their home and spring clean,so the smell. It reminds me of a library.Probably the books...What is a pensioner?

They don't. Used to work with old people. Now I work with young people. (Long story.) As a rule, the young people smell more than the old people.

You could ask why some young mens rooms smell, Its all down to the person, and their own view of hygiene.

I NEVER HEARD OF THAT.. I don't know of any older person with a home that is like that. I go into older rich, home and they are beautiful clean and richly appointed. don't know where u go. unless u are talking about nursing home, which, some of them do smell of urine. that is a matter of sanitation. care of a nursing home. Not a private home of seniors.

Of course not all Seniors have smelly houses. I do remember one elderly neighbor who used moth balls. That's a smell I'll never forget and to this day, I associate it with older people.

I don't necessarily agree but many of us do have a best friend named Ben Gay and we enjoy a great deal of time with Vick's when we have a cold.
