In addition to the other OTC (over the counter) remedies described by other posters, try an ointment or balm containing L-lysine, a naturally occurring amino acid which drastically reduces the time it takes for a cold sore to heal. Taking L-lysine internally can also help prevent them from coming back.

Vitamin E, zinc,l-lysine topically and take it 1500-3000mg until it crusts over.

I have found that Carmex works very well and clears the cold sores up very quickly. You can also use Anbesol cold sore ointment.

i can tell you from someone who has suffered from them in the past and without any doubt zovirax comes top every time, the sooner you treat it the better even at the tingle stage.
