My groundskeeper on Mars swears that a rather large asteroid will hit the red planet on January 30, 2008 - less than six weeks from today. Houston, how is this gonna affect the real estate value of my Martian villa? And where can I find a good cleaner to wash off the red gunk from the walls? Any advice will be deeply appreciated.

Meteorites and asteroids striking Mars have the potential to do greater damage than those hitting Earth, because Mars has a much thinner atmosphere. Smaller meteoroids are destroyed before striking the Earth's surface, due to a combination of friction and compression heating of the atmosphere. Mars' atmosphere, being thinner, has less of an effect on incoming space rocks.

No, actually.
Nasa is gonna love it. They estimate a 1 in 75 chance. Pretty amazing considering the more usual odds of any asteroid impact.

Nasa has front row seats with the landers taking pictures, and the mars recon orbiter taking pictures.
Who knows, maybe we'll get some debris to study here on earth.

Red gunk?? Uhh, does it turn orange after while?

Well truth be said, I'm looking forward to this meteor striking the earth . . For a change of things, know what I mean?
Things can get pretty boring here on earth, believe me.
A bit of advice ; DON'T EVER COME VISIT HERE!!! - YOU
WON'T WON'T LIKE IT, I CAN ASSURE YOU!!!
Sorry about all this red gunk on your walls, but wait . . don't you live on the RED Planet?
Well, maybe it came from the times, you've leaned against the wall, and didn't even notice.
As for a 'cleaner', no, can't help you with that . . I hire help, since I must protect my hands for the sake of my artwork!

In order to avoid the collision, it is necessary to push the planet out of the path of the incoming asteroid. My wealthy friends with villas on Mars have all been instructed to do handstands approximately one minute prior to the expected impact. Once doing a handstand, they are to push as hard as they can to move the planet out of the way. Apparently, this worked for the super-rich who have villas on Europa. In the 1990's, a chunk of Shoemaker-Levy was on course to strike Europa. The people there did the handstand trick and voila! Europa is still the trendiest spot in the solar system.
