I am finally going back to college. I am going to be a history major. The only colleges that offer the program that i want (Ancient history) I cannot afford and will not get financial aid for. I am going to a community college and have to start with courses like Western Civilization witch is fine. My real question is can I do ancient history on line anywhere and what in the world am I goingt to do with a degree in History? I don't want to teach.

Online degrees are generally a bad idea unless they come from an offshoot of an established and respected university. If you have to take any online courses at all, I suggest you do a traditional / online hybrid.

As for what you can do with a history degree, you could work for a museum, become a writer on a subject that interests you, become a researcher for an academic institution, pair the degree with something more "practical"... there are a lot of options there besides teaching.

I strongly suggest you talk to a university career services department official before you make this commitment so you can tailor your program to the life you want to live someday. Good luck!

What college is the ancient history program at?

You would be surprised at how many independent non need based scholarships are available. You should just search for them and fill out upwards of thirty scholarship applications. Many people go to school for free each year by piecing together $1000 scholarships.

What will you do with a history degree? Ever think about banking or finance? Really, you could do a number of things. You must not realize how many jobs require only a college degree.

There are a lot of opportunities within corporations where you could get a decent job with an bachelors degree.

Congrats on your decision to go back to college! Wonderful!

The sad news, History majors often end up flipping burgers or answering phones. Unless you get a PhD and turn around and teach it (which you said you dn't want to do), you will not be any more employable w/ a degree in History than not having a degree at all, most likely.

That said, could you major in something like Business, w/ History as a minor? At least then you'd be prepared to work in management at a museum.

Or couple History w/ any of a number of majors to make you employable, but for jobs that have the history emphasis you want.

Universities, in their oldest more pure forms, were simply centers of knowledge. It was a place where people could go to to learn. You don't particularly need to do anything with the degree if you simply enjoy learning about the subject- and a few years into it, you may realise a career path that suits you. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but maybe your lecturer and classmates can help?

As to Ancient history degrees online... Well, I know there are plenty of scams out there, so I wouldn't advise getting your credit card out just yet... Call up universities and curriculum council's- the sorts of people who are paid to help you figure out what you're going to do for college. I don't think anything reliable can be found on the internet, though. Good luck.

There is little you can do with a degree in history except teaching, writing, or work in a museum. So find a different major,Preferably one that pays the bills and do ancient history as a hobby.

I will echo the usability of the degree, but its your decision.

I would suggest you find out which books are being used by the colleges where you want to go, and see about buying these books used. Then you have a study guide you can use yourself.
