I have a tree about 1ft in diameter...for many reasons, I can't cut it down but to have it die first. What can I do?
I googled, but confused which is best.
1/ Drill a hole then pour salt to it.
2/ Drill a hole then pour Weed killer to it.
2/ Pour motor oil to it (don't like this--pollution)
3/ Feed it with lots of salt (how much?) since the roots is big and branch out to many directions.
4/ Feed it tons to Nitrogen.
5/ Nail a copper nail to it. (how many? how big the nails?)

I wonder.. Is this tree really on your property? ...Isn't it amazing how quick and knowledgeable we are to give advice on how to kill a tree, but lack the know-how to even grow a lima bean, much less keep it green!! Go figure.

It's not very smart to kill the tree before removing it. It will be very weak and brittle if it gets to that point and if a strong wind should happen to blow your way, it just may crash down on top of your house or maybe the "neighbors".. Good luck and may you find the ability to be honest with yourself.

To kill a tree completely, use a hand saw and make a cut all the way around the base of the tree, thru the bark layer. This is called girdelling. To be sure, cut another line around the tree about 1" above or below the previous cut. Chip out bark between cuts. This will stop all tree sap from being able to travel above the cut. The tree will be essentially dead at that point.

How To Kill A Tree

Handeran's got it. Just be sure to go through both the bark and the cambium. The cambium is the very think layer between the bark and the wood.

The other methods, like applying sale/nitrogen/weed killer, will probably also kill surrounding vegetation, so avoid those.

I'm a little concerned about your post, I have to admit. As a tree grower, some of the times that people have come to me and said "I think my neighbor killed my tree," the tree was dead & standing. Most times, the neighbor ends up paying for the tree they killed. Just in case you're thinking of doing something to a tree that doesn't belong to you, please consider legal ramifications before you begin.

To continue to grow, a tree needs to have the sap rise.Sap is drawn up between the bark and the hard wood,so to kill it you only need to cut off that conduit.Make two cut s around the circumference an inch apart and chisel out the in between bit. That should do it,with no pollution.

Your best bet and fastest way to Kill a tree is to cut a 3" wide strip of bark and about 1/2" of wood from the tree. This will damage and stop the flow of water to the top of the tree and stop the flow of nutrients to the roots for storage.

Handeran's right this will absolutely kill the tree but if you want to make is less obvious what you did pull off some extra bark so it looks like an animal did it.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/4dZSW
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
