Now, I am not completely computer incompetant. I know quite a lot about html, javascript, xml, http, css, etc.

What I DON'T know is the differences between all the domain, hosts, directories... <- THAT confuses me.

I have a paypal account, and i'm not looking for a free website like website.com/yourwebsite name. I want a yourwebsitename.com website. Make sense?

I checked with godaddy, and the price was atsronomical. $500??? I would like something cheap, that I would pay monthly instead of a year payment up front and a good explanation of what I NEED on my website. Not what I MIGHT want.

Simple website with simple layout. A personal portfolio with a contact option/links.

Help me?

Web hosting providers, like any company want to get as much from you as they can, they are a business. The truth is, some sales person is trying to sell you options on a hosting plan that you don't need. A web host is a simple thing. They have a computer that stores all your HTML files so the website can be viewed on the web. They will ask you what you want to call your site. For example, mywebite.com. This is the domain, and you need not worry about it too much. The hosting provider. will secure the domain, if available, and maintain it for you.

When you go shopping for a hosting plan, choose the simple programs. Most of them bill monthly at around $3 to $10 a month and you have the option of including additional features in the future if you need them. I used to host will Apollo and had no problems. They have good support and the prices are fair.

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool which is totally free. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage.

Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in the "domain name," you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... a homepage URL which will be masked by the domain name. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE.

When you acquire a domain name, connect it using a redirection service [as discussed above] and submit/publish the domain name on major search engines/directories in order for Net surfers to find your website.

Good luck!

Let me see if I can help a little.
A domain name is like (http://www.your name.com)
You have to purchase it they will do a search to see if the name you pick is available.
2nd you need a web hosting service this is where they will place your site on there servers to be accessed by the outside world.
Next you need software to be able to design and maintain your site, ( Make changes whenever neccessary)
Save your self a lot of grief and use Yahoo. Click the link below and you can get everything in one place, they charge the monthly fee, and there software is SiteBuilder and very easy to use.
http://www.geocities.com
I have been using them for 10 years, Never had any problems ever.
The cost increases by the amount of space you think you will need.
