Here is a lot of information with step by step articles you should use to hook up your PS3. You didn't say if you are using a wired or wireless connection, so I had to give you all of the information.
http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=fHWefVQi&p_lva=&p_li=&p_accessibility=0&p_page=1&p_cv=1.5&p_pv=1.4&p_prods=4&p_cats=5&p_hidden_prods=&prod_lvl1=4&cat_lvl1=5&p_search_text=&p_new_search=1
Now, that is only the first page of Help for PS3! So, please be sure to check out the next page of information, and book mark these so you can use them later on.
I highly reccomend you figure out what you did wrong, set everything back to default factory settings and start fresh. The first page I looked at for a wired connection says to be sure to do those steps first for a hassle free setup.
I also reccomend you read all of the instructions, print them out if need be, and follow any links for additional information and do not get into a hurry while performing setup. When we don't read carefully, and get into a hurry, (it is exciting to get a PS3 and I would want to hook it up as quickly as possible to I could play! lol) we make mistakes. Even a small mistake can mess up the entire configuration. So, take it slow, and be sure to read it all before hand so you have a good solid overview of the process.
Now, if you wish to use a wireless conection, read both the wired page and the wireless and see if there are simularities between the two. Often, when hooking up a wired device which has the option of being hooked up wirelessly, there are duplicate instructions that are sometimes written just a bit differently, and one may be able to help you understnad better than the other.
Also, I do *not* reccomend you setup a static IP address. Your routers DHCP Server needs to be able to provide a Private IP address for your console, and when it does you are safer, as you are behind the NAT firewall too.
If you *do* decide to setup a static IP address, please go to this website and read up on how to do it properly. This website also has a few hundred games and other programs which may need to be Port Forwarded in order for you to play them Online. While the games which come on DVD are great fun, you also have access to a great many Online.
http://www.portforward.com/default.htm
Read what Port Forwarding is, then locate your router in the list, and then locate what game you wish to connect to through the routers firewall. Please remember that you will also need to configure you software firewall for the games as well. These pages also have troubleshooting steps on how to isolate if it is the software or hardware firewall blocking the application or game.
Now, before you use the suggestions on Port Forwarding, your router probably has a long list of games in its Virtual area. All you need to do is locate it in the list, click on it to Add it, and it is automatically added and forwarded for you.
Also, make sure you enable your UpnP feature in your router. More and more applications are using UpnP, and when they do, and it is enabled in your router, these programs can communicate with your router and automatically configure what ports they need to communicate through the firewall. It is a super feature and works great.
Good luck and much fun with your PS3, and please have a very happy holiday season.
