With my first I had demerol just so that I could sleep (I had been in labor for almost 20 hours at that point!), I was dealing with the pain just fine I just needed sleep! I delivered her after 25 hours in labor. With my second I didn't have any pain meds. I was in labor with her for 8 hours and she was a whopping 10 pounds 4 oz. I had an emergency c-section with my third so I had an epidural with her.

I had an epideral, however, all of my contractions were in the lower part of my stomach and I could still feel them a little. Also, they gave it to me at like 2pm when I was like 3 or 4 cm dialated. Well my daughter was not born until 9:45pm. By the time I got to the hardest most painful part, the epideral had worn off. I might as well of just done it all natural! I always say with my next one I just might!

I had an epideral and I am sooooo glad!!! I don't really see why women don't get one (no offense to anyone). It saved me a lot of pain :-) It wasn't too bad at all. And my baby is now a happy healthy 7 month old! Some people say it makes you or the baby groggie, but not me or my son. It's an individual choice, but I highly recommend the epideral.

I had an epidural, but at first I only did it because the doctor said it might help progress things. In the end or near the end i asked for more because the pain was unbearable. I ended up with an emergency c-section after 18 hours, so most women do not have that problem.

no epidurals but I did have a shot of pethedine with both labours about an hour before the delivery. It helped to make me dilate the last couple of centimetres and took the edge of the pain so I could gather the energy to push.
I don't like the idea and risks of epidurals but they were still my last option should I have felt I needed it. I plan on going the same way with this baby.

For my second child I had an epidural, and the pain relief was absolutely glorious!!! For my third child I asked for an epidural, but the anesthesiologist never came, so I had no choice but to do it all natural. Now that it's all said and done, I know I could do it again with no pain medicine, but there is no shame in having an epidural. If you can handle the pain, go for it, you'll feel a huge sense of accomplishment. If not, get the epidural and enjoy the experience.

All natural here. I know that's not a popular answer but believe me I did what I felt was best for my baby and myself.
In reading the responses I'm thinking," is it any wonder the C-section rate in the US is approaching 50%????? " I know that's not a popular answer. Research has shown that inductions lead to a 50% increase in C-sections. Epidurals lead to a 40% increase in C-sections. Combine the two and what do you get?

I had every type of pain relief going.
1st I had pethidine as soon as I arrived at the hospital as I was quite far along in my labour
when the pethidine wore off I needed gas & air.. My daughter was back2back so i had a lot of back pain.
when she got stuck after 2 hrs of pushing I had a spinal block when they attempted the vontouse but that failed so I ended up with a caesarean. I don't regret having a spinal block. I wouldn't have been able to have my daughter wihout it. Don't feel pressurised into not having pain relief if you feel that you need it. Don't decide that your not going to have it and tell everyone because unless you have had a baby before you are not going to know how you are gonna cope with the pain. Like my mother says .. you don't get any rewards for not having pain relief so carry on. I hope this helps.
