Luke 2:23 "As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord."

Sanctified or holy.

The firstborn son was viewed as a special blessing from God. It meant that there was no question as to who was the heir. It allowed the family line to be continued.
