We are on this earth for one lifetime, each of us a single individual amongst billions.

Do you think that you can make a difference to serious issues such as climate change, poverty and racism?

Do you think that each individual has a responsibility to educate themselves in order to be able to do all they can to make a difference?

Or do you think that it makes no difference whether we try or not?

If all the cars in the UK were taken off the road it would not make a ha'penny worth of difference to the CO2 output of the world...yet it's British drivers that have to pay most in petrol prices, car tax for bigger cars etc.
A power station in China produces more CO2 in a week than British cars do in a year.
Reducing our 'carbon footprint' is like stopping one seagull from pissing in the sea...it would make a TINY difference to the sea level but not much.

Have you heard the story of the the two kids that walked along the sea shore? Well there were many thousands of starfish that had washed upon the shore and had no way of getting back into the ocean so that they could rehydrate themselves and not dry out and die.Well one of these kids just kept throwing these starfish back into the ocean. The other child asked him why he even bothered to throw these starfish back into the sea when there were so many? The child that kept throwing the starfish into the ocean responded," because it makes a difference to this starfish". If you can make a positive difference in one persons life, than you have indeed made a difference even in this great wide world.

Of course we can individually make a difference!

Look how small a virus or a germ is and then contemplate the damage they can do!

Collectively people can move mountains, individually we can move hillocks.

It doesn't have to be news worthy or earth shattering to make what each of us does important.

What is vital is that we step up to the plate and do what is needed when it is needed.

Humanity dies when we turn our heads and think that we cannot do anything.

Very few people are unlucky enough to have a significant effect on the world. lots of people talk about "everyone has their 'carbon footprint', that they should try to reduce as much as possible". Personally i think its a load of crap, it will never amount to anything and it's already too late to change global warming, unless money(from environmentally 'bad' sources) is spent on research of new ways to create energy.

the real problem is China and India and Brazil. they are soon to be three of the world's most powerful countries and china will overtake Russia, UK and USA fairly soon. They need to stop burning fossil fuels etc.

as with the poverty/racism, nobody can stop that, the world is too greedy and power hungry to give a s*** about anyone.

YES

Each one of us can do that on an individual level by showing someone close to them an act of kindness or generosity.

These things do make a difference!

part one:
what do you think the world would be like today if there had never been any inspiration in human beings? a world without einstein, without darwin, without curie, without hitler, without any of the people listed in www.rateitall.com/t-1283-most-influential-people-in-world-history.aspx?

part two:
yes, i believe in the power of the people (even though the flame burns weakly today), the power of revolution, the power of people not settling for less than they believe they deserved. it makes me sad when someone is resigned to a bad lot and has lost the ability to imagine a way out.

part three:
without a doubt. if you have the capacity to think in that way- then you have the responsibility.

part four:
i hope i never subscribe to that viewpoint and i hope you don't either.

Of course it makes a difference, and we should try to.

We just may not be prepared for how big that difference is.
