My 14 week old has been cooing a lot more, making more noises which I know is great and normal. Yesterday all of the sudden she started doing this deep (almost grunting) hmmmmm, hmmmmmm, hmmmmmm over and over. She does it when she is bored w/ whatever she is doing or my hubby or I leave her sight for a little to long. It doesn't even sound like her and it started out of nowhere! She is also suddenly eating like she did when she was a month old (every 2-3 hours) at night. So is this her just growing? Is it normal for them to all the sudden make a totally new noise...and do it...over and over and over... =) She is acting great otherwise, all happy, smiling, etc... Bear with me, this is my 1st.

I've heard lots of babies do that grunting sound, don't worry it's normal. Babies just babble and grunt because at an age like 14 weeks its starting to occur to them that those sounds are coming from THEM. I think it amuses them, so they just keep doing it. :-D And I wouldn't worry about the eating, either. Kids do a lot of erratic growing in those first couple years, so you're going to come across periods where they eat like horses. Sounds like everything is going just fine.

It just means that she discovered she could make another sound, and she is fascinated by it. Especially since the grunt/hum probably makes a vibration in his throat that she can feel. That is normal. Over the next few months she will begin to add new sounds to her vocabulary, usually beginning with the vowels. Expect that she will also be fascinated when she learns to make "spit" noises (like a "raspberry") and learns that she can blow spit bubbles. It is all part of learning language.

As for the eating, that is normal also. Babies go through "growth spurts" in which they will eat everything in sight for three weeks, and then they will refuse more then two bits of anything at a time for a couple weeks. As long as the child is "happy", energetic, and gaining weight, it is normal.

Aren't they just precious at that age? (In fact, they are precious at any age...)

Perfectly normal. And once they learn a new sound they like to repeat repeat repeat it! My 14 week old has started to squeal. He's so funny and so cute. And if we repeat exactly what he does he'll do something new just to see if we will repeat him again. As for the eating.....I'm sure it's another growth spurt. I've read that at 3 and 6 months it's common for growth spurts. Good luck and have fun with your little one! We are!

She's experimenting with tones, it's entirely normal. My son sometimes sounds like he belongs in the soprano section of a choir and other times sounds the exact opposite with a lower pitch than I can even reach. Don't be concerned, she is merely finding her voice and mimicking the tones she hears around her until she finds her own. It's honestly a GOOD sign.

Yes! As a matter of fact, my 4 week old went from a soprano to a baritone overnight! Now he sings with IL DIVO and sounds great, although his tux is kind of big on him and he still can't sit up without his head tilting to one side.
