The Globetrotters never competed in the NBA or ABA. Since the 50's they have traveled around the globe doing entertainment exhibition basketball games against the Generals. Most Globetrotters are former college basketball stars trying to catch on with an NBA team.

they did compete against the minneapolis lakers led by george mikan and beat them consistently. a number of nba hall of famers were members of the globetrotters at some point in their careers. wilt joined the trotters before entering the nba because he was a year younger than the age minimum. he again joined them after his retirement for an exhibition game on board the uss nimitz.

They were actually quite good players. The only times they would play straight is when they were behind in the score.
Wilt Chamberlin played for them for short time early in his career.
