my builder routed the dryer vent about 20' up through the roof. is there any way to vent it into the garage without getting lint all over the place?

Venting your dryer into the garage is a violation of building code and will reduce the value of the house. If you vent your dryer into the garage it will raise the humidity substantially which will find its way into your home, as there generally isn't a vapor barrier between the garage and the house. Mold and a garage where everything rusts should not be on the to do list.

Instead, if necessary, bring the vent through the garage to the exterior or over to a soffit if you don't want it through the roof.

If you are worried about blowing a lot of lint into the garage after you reroute it I don't think it will be enough to worry about. I would just drill a hole directly into the garage (being sure there's nothing in the wall to hit like wires or plumbing) and install a dryer wall kit. If after using it that way for a while you see too much lint in the garage just figure out a way to stand a filter like you use in your heating and air conditioning system in front of it and change the filter now and then. Put this filter outside where it's easy to get to. Or maybe you could put a bag of some sort over the end of it. I was thinking of a vacuum cleaner bag but I think that would restrict the flow too much. Just pay attention to how much heat makes it out of the vent.

The dryer vent may be too long and needs to have a dryer vent booster installed to help vent the lent outside. Fantech makes a variety of dryer vent boosters that can help with problem. Also call a professional to clean your dryer vent and you should not have ant issues.

Don't vent into the garage, you'll be sorry. And if there is a hot water heater out there, it's a fire hazard.
Find a way to vent outside.

I have heard of a container to receive the venting. Don't know much about it.

Use a vacuum to suck out all the lent you can after you disconnect the lint hose and duct tape the hose ends.
