A file cabinet holds documents in the physical form that have to be retrieved with the human hand when the information is needed. A person looks through the files, finds the one that is needed, and takes the file from the cabinet.

A database, stores documents on a rigid disk in analog format. When the information on the disk is needed, the computer searches for the information contained on the disk, when found, this information is translated from analog to digital information that the CPU can read and understand. When the CPU decides that the right file has been found, it displays the information to the computer user on the monitor.
