5 door car generally means a hatchback, the cars where you can open up the boot lid (hinges at the roof rather than under the rear window) and flatten the back seats.

4 door a car with the hinges for the boot that opens under the rear window.

Hope that helps.

I suppose technically both are 5 door cars if you include the boot lid. The major difference I would think is that with the 5 door the whole of the rear including the window lifts up and the rear seats fold flat giving you room to carry large or long items which isnt possible with the 4 door because of it having a small lid and a partition behind the rear seats thus making it difficult to carry large items. I suppose you could say that the 5 door gives you some of the capabilities of a small van whereas the 5 door doesnt I think the former name of hatchback instead of 5 door makes the difference clearer Graham

The so called 5 door is also called a hatchback. Rather than having an separate trunk (or "boot" on the eastern side of the Atlantic) you can access the interior of the vehicle from the hatch!

The main difference is that the back glass is in the panel that opens on a 5 door, and is fixed on the body on a 4 door.

A three door car is a two door hatchback, a five door is a four door with a hatchback. A saloon has a triditional booted car with no, or little, access to it from the cabin.
