It wouldn't do much, beyond possible melting the ice caps and bringing mars back to life.. it isn't going to knock mars off orbit or spray ash into the earth... nor would it blow out the sun.. Sun is not a candle :) It would be like a large meteor hitting here, same type of thing, ash and etc covering the whole planet, causing a large amount of heat and then cold then heat which would help us to terraform the planet, so a very good thing since we need a new planet, we junked this one pretty quickly..
Their is a 1 in 72 chance that Mars could get nailed by a meteor on Jan 30th, still slim, but that could give you an idea.

It would have no effect on Earth at all, with the exception of getting a lot of people excited, and causing a lot of talk about going to Mars. I suspect it might make the cover of Time or Newsweek and a bunch of talking heads would spend a great deal of time pontificating about its meaning.

Mars will fly of into space like a balloon and collide with earth forming a second moon. Lovers can sit in the moon-moon light and sing "sail along both moons".
Except for that nothing much.
