Experience puts you in charge of projects. The type of engineering does not really matter. The project manager at my job has a degree in Aerospace.

To be in charge of projects, you would have the primary contract with the owner (prime consultant) and you would hire the other engineering disciplines as your sub-consultants.

In my line of work architects and civil engineers are the prime consultants as they have direct contract with the owners.

You need to be the project manager. Get an MBA and then you will lead project quickly.

The other thing you can do is become PMP certified, go to pmi.org for more info.
