Originally if a man had his left ear pierced it meant that he was gay and sexually dominant, and having his right ear pierced meaning gay and sexually submissive.

Gradually, it evolved to a man with his right ear pierced perceived as being gay and a man with his left ear being pierced perceived as being straight.

Now, it just means a pierced ear.

(Men getting their ear pierced originated with pirates; the value of the earring was meant to pay for their burial if they were lost at sea and their body washed ashore).

I don't know what they're teaching people in this country (US). In my culture (African descent), earrings were always worn by men, mainly as adornment and show of wealth. My father taught me it signified a man who has crossed the ocean...similar to that, I have heard it was used to pay to bury a sailor if he were to drown at sea and his body washed ashore. I have also been told that in some parts of Africa, an earring signifies that you have killed a lion before.

As for which lobe, I gotta say I have my left pierced, when I turned 12 years old, because my father's left was pierced...

Back in the 70's there was a code among gay men to indicate sexual position preference. That code was expressed through colored handkerchiefs as well as ear piercing. The most basic tenet was left for dominant and right for passive. That filtered out into the straight community (as so many of our fashion trends do) and was translated as left for straight and right for gay.

ha I read the first guys answer on here and I pierced my left ear first, it was the cartilage, but still left... I think it's just all preferences... I didn't start with my right lobe because it reminded me too much or being pirate (I know giggle), but I eventually had my left & right lobes pierced. Which reminds me I haven't worn earings in FOREVER...

I think it looks nicer in the left ear. I've seen so many conflicting descriptions of what it "means" for each ear. I don't think there are any rules other than which one the guy prefers.

It really makes no difference. Allegedly at one stage it was left for straight, right for gay but I knew many gay men with rings in the left ear and many straight men with them in the right ear. It is personal preference.

If anything, wearing it in your right ear says "I might be gay, I might be straight, whatever I am it's none of your business." Wearing it in the left ear says "I'm chicken" :o)
