The thing with rear projection is that it is bulkier.
It is not slim.

No. I have a Toshiba rear projection, pre DLP. It's a 57H84 57". My father just got a 42" LG LCD HDTV and you know what? Mine has a much better picture. The non HD channels look okay on mine and terrible on his, and even the HD looks better on mine. I tried tuning his and got it a bit better than factory settings, but it's overall terrible. Also, my TV has a great scale function that stretches the middle of a 4:3 picture uniformly and the edges non uniformly to fill the screen (Theaterwide1) and his just stretches it terrible. Sure on an LCD you can leave a 4:3 picture as is without worrying about burn in, but it's a pain when you need the TV remote to do it and most of the time you have the cable or satellite remote.

Now, there may be other brands that are better than LG. I dunno. All I know is that my several year old non DLP projection TV looks WAY better than his brand new LCD.

If I were shopping now and the thickness and weight thing weren't an issue, I would go with DLP projection over LCD or plasma ANY DAY.

LCD is better when you need it wall mounted or thickness/weight is an issue - like in a bedroom or something.

Plasma and LCD almost always look better. Rear projection is a much bigger tv, so harder to move, takes up more space, and even according to rear projection fans, need to be calibrated yearly to keep them looking good.

Plasma does not ONLY last 4 years, that is misinformation.

sorry to tell you but the rear projection is cheaper and may last a little longer but the hdtv is better. DO NOT GET A PLASMA FOR THEY ONLY LAST ABOUT 4 YEARS!!!!!!!! LCD tvs will last you for about 8 to 10 years with the same quality as a plasma, samsung is a great high quality lcd for about 1300 for a 42" tv, also you might want to look into blu ray or an hd dvd player, or you could go with and xbox 360 or ps3, xbox 360 has hd dvd and ps3 has blu ray... i hope i helped you out!!!!

It isn't "that much better"....

I chose to buy an HD CRT Projection unit for one sole reason....

It's reliable....
I don't have to buy Lamps for it every two years, and I don't have to worry about it only having a "theroretical" lifetime of 5 to 8 years...

My last one gave me 18 years of service...and all I ever expect out of one is 10 to 15 years at most....

I trust the design because they have been improved since the late 70's....

When the other technology gets at least 10 years.....THEN I'll consider getting the Mitsubishi LASER DLP unit....

Yep....that's the one that I'll wait to buy.
And I'll wait with my Hitachi Projo....
