I'm usually sat in a restaurant, eating fish, and then you feel it in your mouth, and I haven't a clue how to get rid of it nicely. It's either open your mouth and try and get it out, or my usual run to the toilets and spit the whole lot out.

Is there a 'correct' way?

Thanks lol

There is a correct way, according to Miss Manners. It comes out of your mouth the same way you put it into your mouth. Hold the fork up to your mouth and gently push it onto your fork and then place the item on the edge of your plate. You can also put it in your napkin or remove the bone from your mouth with your fingers - discreetly - and place it on the edge of your plate. Since anyone who's ever had fish has had a fish bone in their mouths no one will think less of you.

A fish bone is potentially dangerous if swallowed and should be removed immediately. If you are really bothered and want to do it discreetly, pick up your napkin with one hand and hold it in front of your mouth while you remove the bone with the fingers of the other hand. Place the bone on the side of your plate once the job is done. You can also say to your companion, before you remove the bone, "Excuse me, fish bone" and they will understand perfectly and sympathise while you remove it.

pull out the bone with your fingers. (Try not to bring a mouthful of fish with it). Put the bone on the side of the plate or on the bone plate (crescent shaped) if provided

Wipe your mouth with a napkin.

No , you may not leave the table. That'a very rude

if you feel the need to get rid of it at the table....
either a fish-bone or a piece of grisel from meat..
Screw up your napkin (providing its a paper one!)
and pretend to cough into it....
(in the process, remove the offending item from your mouth...wrapping it in the serviette!)

If, on the other hand, its a cloth serviette...then you have no other choice than to go to the toilet!

If it is stuck in your throat, eat a piece of bread (or hush puppy) and it will force it down into your stomach, or if it is stuck in the roof of your mouth, just pull it out discreetly.

When I was a child, every Friday we would eat fried trout, and fish bones would get stuck in my throat often. My mother would have me eat hush puppies and it would force it down. It did not harm my intestines either.

I don't think there is a nice way, and usually don't order fish out. Even paying ridiculously high prices for fish fillet doesn't ensure there won't be some in there. Nasty and dangerous.

Hold the napkin up to mouth and cough it out. Most will think your being polite as your covering your mouth to cough.

I did this as a child when I ate liver. Its works ! BTW I can't stand liver.
