I realize what your concerns are, that the Nikon Coolpix S series are well-manufactured cameras. Unfortunately, there are any number of S series cameras which have been offered and advertised as "factory refreshed" items sold at a professional camera stores such as samys.com. Nevertheless, your particular S51 has a built-in non-expanding optical zoom which will not be easily damaged due to an accidental drop. A check of reliability ratings of various camera manufacturers on Consumer Reports' website does indicate that Nikon is somewhat lagging behind Canon. But take comfort by various top contributors in their comments, if you are careful, the Nikon will last forever.
Good luck!

I have owned Nikons starting way back in the mid sixties. They have always had excellent cameras, and continue tto support their reputation for the very best in optics (lenses) and advanced camera design and features.
My latest Nikon is a P5400 and I am staggered how many features I'm still discovering, and which make for a better and better shooting experience the more I use them and the camera.
It's not just the camera. I also look at the accessories that make it even more flexible, like the total lens set, slide copy adapter, lens hood, remote control and shutter release, tripod bushing (is a must), flash shoe allowing you to add-on an extra-powerful flash with on-camera auto flash control, waterproof case for underwater, etc., etc. When I buy a camera, I want to use it everywhere, so I go ahead and buy all the accessories also.

I have an older Nikon film camera (FE-2) and a newer digital D70. Olympus makes a series of shock and waterproof cameras, the Stylus SW series. I have a SW 720, it's a great tough little camera.
Nikon and Olympus both make good cameras. My first digital was a Canon. It was a battery pig, I would only get about 10 pictures on a set of charged batteries. I sent it back and they said it was working fine. That was the last Canon I will ever buy.

I have a Nikon D40X and have had it for about 4 months... I haven't had a single problem with it and it takes outstanding pictures. I don't know the stats on the S51, but I would recommend Nikon. If mine keeps up working like it does, I'd never buy another brand.

Nikon Optics are better than most cameras in the medium price range. The digital part is as good as any others. I have Three Nikons. Two digitals one analog. I am still amazed at the quality of my Coolpix P5000,

If you are careful with your camera it will last a long time - probably until you are ready to upgrade.
Use a wrist strap or neck strap - preferably a neck strap - to prevent dropping your camera. In 36 years I have yet to drop a camera. My cameras are always either hanging around my neck, on a tripod, or in my camera bag.
Keep it away from water unless you have it in a protective cover made for that purpose.
Buy a padded case for it and don't toss it in your backpack with all your books, water bottle, etc.
Use accessories and batteries made for your camera. A "bargain" battery that damages your camera isn't a bargain.
Before trying to use your new camera, READ & STUDY the Owner's manual for it. That is the only way you'll learn to use it to its potential.

When I used analog cameras I loved Nikon. Nikon for me is still the best for film photography, but if you want to change to digital at some point Canon is a better option.
