I just bought a new USB 2.0 wire for my portable hard drive as I lost the original one. When I plug it in the lights on the hard drive lights up but it is not detected at my laptop. What seemed to be the problem?

I am using PC and the USB can work with other devices such as thumbdrive and I have also checked the disk management but the device is not found there too.

You are definitely going to have to have the same cable, how do
I know? I lost the cable to mine and went through the same thing! At this point, you really only have two options:

1)Go to the manufacturer's website and order a replacement (some will even send it for free; kensington sent me an entire new keyboard and mouse just for asking).

2)Go purchase the same hard drive from wherever you first purchased it, open the box, swap the cables, take it back...easy as pie! (this may seem wrong, but it will eventually get sent back to the manufacturer and get tested and reboxed so....no harm, no foul.

Since you had a different USB drive previously, it is possible that the information the new drive is sending is too close to the information for the old drive still stored on the computer. Try the following

In the Control Panel, click the System Icon
Select the Hardware tab
Click the Device Manager button
Look down through the list of hardware and see if there are any "Unknow Devices" listed, or any devices with a yellow ! in a triangle in front of them. If so, right click on the listing and "Uninstall" the device(s). Then Reboot.
If not, then find the USB catagory and click the + in front of it to expand the listing and show all USB devices.
Right-click on EVERY USB device and "Uninstall" it.
This will clear any stored information on USB devices
Reboot and it will reinstall the USB ports and be ready to detect your new USB hard drive.

There could be lot of possibilities, to list a few:

1) Is your portable HDD detecting on any other PC with the same wire, then there is an issue with your laptop.

2) Try changing the cable may be your Laptop or portable HDD is not compatible with USB 2.0, it may be compatible with an older USB version.

3) Also check if other USB devices are detecting on your laptop, that will eliminate the possibility of faulty USB port on your laptop

4) There is a possibility of drivers not loading or conflicting.

Some manufactures of portable hard drives use proprietary wires. Why? I don't know. Best bet is to go on line to the manufactures website and order a new one.
