Hi, I just turned 18, and my place of work is asking me to fill out IRS forms. What do my employers need these forms for? How would this affect my income? Or say how much would it affect my income? Is there a step-by-step process that I can do to ensure everything is filed correctly?

They're asking you to fill out a Form W-4. That form is used to advise your employer of your SSN and tell them how much tax to withhold from your pay. Your state may have a similar form or may use the information from the Form W-4 for state taxes. If you fail to give your employer your SSN, you probably won't be paid. If you refuse to file the Form W-4 but do give them your SSN, they are required by law to withhold tax at the highest rate, i.e. Single and 0.

They will also have you complete a USCIS Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. That provides proof of your legal status to work in the US. (What's all the noise about "immigration reform?" We already have the laws, we just need to enforce them!) If you don't fill out the Form I-9 and provide proof of entitlement to work -- usually a driver's license and SS card -- you won't be allowed to work at all.

The only IRS form you should need to complete for your employer is W-4. The employer should keep a supply on hand.

Your employer should provide the forms and help you fill them out. You can also see www.irs.gov.

It's probably just going to be one form. Forms are available at irs.gov
