I'll assume you want to buy a point and shoot.

For point and shoots I prefer Sony. Nothing wrong with Canons or Nikons, Sony is just my personal preference. They operate quickly and provide as good of quality as the two other main brands. You can get a decent Sony (albeit without manual controls) for around $180 (I'm referring to the Sony DSC-W55). If you want manual controls you can step up a model to the DSC-W80.

If you're looking for a long-zoom point and shoot I recommend you check out Canon's lineup. I like the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. It has 8 megapixels, 12x zoom, and great macro ability. It will run you about $360.

If you're looking at digital SLRs and have a budget of under $1000 I'll again go with Canon's consumer line of DSLRs. I've owned a few Digital Rebels (350D (XT) and 400D (XTi)) and they've been great.

If you want to step up in features and durability you could go with the Canon 40D. It'll run you a couple hundred over $1000.

Hope this helps!
