Yes that's good! My boyfriend and I dated, but we didn't really know each other that well. It was more of a make-out sesh most of the time, or whatever. We knew each other but not well enough to be dating. When we broke up, we still talked everyday, and he said he wanted to get back together with me, but before we did we need to be best friends. We need to be without a doubt, all knowing of each other. We are together now and doing better, but I think thats a good thing he calls you his best friend.

I would say that if they directly asked him what you are to him and he simply said you are his best friend only, that is not a good sign. It sounds like he is trying to cover up all the time you spend together with saying you're best friends.
That being said, if it is implied that you are his girlfriend and he meant to say that you are his best friend in addition to being his girlfriend, that is a very good thing. Being make out buddies is nothing compared to a relationship that you can be best friends as well as bf/gf.

My wife is my best friend. What you are worrying about is that you are ONLY his best friend. But you are ALSO his best friend. Nothing to worry about its a good thing (just make sure you both keep other friends and interests away from each other or you may start to feel smothered after a time).

Sometimes best friends are more than just boyfriend and girlfriend, in your case he thinks of you not only as a girlfriend but even more than that. You are very lucky in that he sees you in that way.
