My 12 year old has one... But the only reason she has it is because her really close friend moved to another State... And they SMS(Text) each other about 5/15 times a day... She is not on a plan we just use pay as u go system... I will say it has come in handy when she has stay at friends houses etc...

But at 10 I think there a bit to young... I was opposed to my child getting one at first took me a while before I finally gave in... I think they need to be a bit older and willing to take on the Responsibility of having a phone of there own...

I wouldn't get my kid a cell phone until highschool, and even then they just use them to talk to their friends. I couldn't imagine having a cell phone at the age of 10 and I am 26.

i think that's too young. i got one when i started driving. other that than i think a child younger than 15 or 16 needs to learn more responsibility about contact and calling in to parents to EARN a cell phone. you will save yourself a handful of cash and a head ache. if you are very concerned about certain times they are going out (which at 10 years old should not be a problem) you can give your cell phone and have them call the house phone. if you are not comfortable giving them your cell phone that should be an indicator of whether they can handle their own.

I would give my child a cell phone to use only for emergencies and not just to chat endlessly with their friends. So in this case no I wouldn't get it as a Christmas gift but another time and stress it is ONLY for emergencies.

Do they need one to contact you?

If not, then NO. Regardless of how responsible they are, there's the issue of them being attacked for it, or losing it and having someone run up a huge bill. They are with their friends all day, every day, they do not need it to talk to them.

My daughter is 11 and needs one so I know when to go collect her from the bus on the far side of a dangerously busy road. She left it on the bus one day, and in the five minutes before her friend realised, a couple of other kids had found it and run up a bill of several pounds. Luckily she's on prepay and there was only a fiver on it in the first place...

Getting your son a cell phone will be wonderful because if he/she is out late, you can always call your child.. If you can afford it, it would be acceptable for your kid to have phone. If there's an emergency, he/she can call you.

Cell phones are wonderful tools if your child is responsible under your phone plan when it comes to not running up a bill.

Lots of 10 year olds have them, I think it's a great gift.

Geez, coming from someone who has worked in the wireless industry for 5 years I can tell you parents that purchase a child that age a cell phone are usually ridiculed. Your child should be ready for a phone when they just enter High School at the EARLIEST.

Kids are never too young to be kept safe by the security of a mobile phone. Peace of mind for parents is important as well. This is a great phone that is meant exactly for kids like yours, who are too young for a regular cell phone.
