You're not obligated to go. But the real question is, why did you go to all that trouble applying to a military academy if it wasn't your "first" choice to begin with. The application process was just tedious. Well for whatever it is, good luck.

If you are not interested or willing to serve in the AF, I can't understand why you would even apply for the Academy. The application process for any of the official military academies is very different than just applying for a college. You will need the recommendation of one of your state's Senators or Congressmen and they are only allowed to recommend so many people each year. You would have to provide other people as references, as well as have an impressive academic record, as well as other extracurricular and community activities. You would undergo an extensive background check for security purposes. If you are viewing the academy as a possible choice, not as the beginning of a successful career as a military officer, than I wouldn't apply.

Wow, you got several good answers right off the bat. Yup, they're right, as long as you haven't signed anything to commit to military service, they got no hold on you hon. Cool that you got accepted to the USAFA, but if you're still a free man, go where you want. But yeah, if you had to be recommended, that is kinda messed up to put other people to the trouble if that isn't what you really wanted. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Considering how prestigious it is to get into the Air Force Academy, and how difficult (you have to be recommended by your congressional rep, and they can only recommend a couple of people each year), and that it's a free ride, no tuition, why would you go anywhere else? People don't apply there as a fallback position.

lol - being accepted to the academy isn't like being drafted.
Congrats on getting accepted - since it's one of the hardest things to do.
However, as long as you didn't sign any paperwork obligating you to a program afterwards or service, you can reject your acceptence, and go to another college. Just don't expect to get accepted again.

First of all, you don't get "accepted" to a service academy. You receive an "appointment". And yes you can turn it down if you decide to go somewhere else.
But if you do decide to go to school somewhere else, turn down the appointment ASAP. Someone else is on that list and will receive an appointment once you decline yours. If you wait too long, the next most qualified person will probably have decided to go elsewhere.

You can go wherever you like so long as you haven't signed any paperwork committing you to the program (school + service afterward).

As long as you haven't signed anything saying that your acceptance is binding, then you can opt out.
