Depending upon your career field within the Air Force, you can expect to deploy at least every 15 months for at least 4 to 6 months. Also, currently AF members are being tasked to fill in for short comings in Army staffing....in the three years we have been at our current base I have seen numerous young Airmen go off to a short training course to learn convoy duty. So whoever said you would be safe on a base was not entirely correct. And even if you did have a "safe" desk jockey job, that does not guarantee your safety. My husband spent 6 months in Iraq last year. The base he was at was "attacked" several times a week. Sure the explosives thrown over the fence rarely caused bodily harm, but there were a few instances of injury or near injury.
In my opinion if you are serious about joining any branch of our military you need to come to terms with the facts of war. You will go off to war.

If it's safety you're after, you are reasonably safe in the Air Force. But you are also reasonably safe in the Army, Navy or Marines.
There are chances of going to war in any military service, and there are chances to get killed in any service, not all of them due to hostile action. If you drive a car you are probably experiencing a greater risk of being killed every time you venture out on the highways.
The Air Force would welcome someone who can work with electronics, but if you join try to maintain some spirit of patriotism as you go about your tasks. The service doesn't exist for the sole purpose of wearing pretty uniforms and singing "Off we go into the Wild Blue Yonder..."

In my travels around Iraq right now, I've seen a lot of Air force (can't reveal where-op sec) but I noticed they were doing it all on base. By that I mean computer work, MWR, security, office, etc... So there is ALWAYS a chance of you being deployed. If that worries you, then maybe you should look into the civilian sector for work. There has also been mortar attacks at those bases and the Air Force responds accordingly, if you don't think you can in a situation like that, (grab your rifle and hunt them down,or get into a humvee and search the area) then you should definitely stay home.

To answer your question accurately, we would have to know what AFSC you're choosing, then know in advance what unit you are being assigned to, and be able to predict world events...which isn't going to happen since Miss Cleo got in trouble. :)
The thing you should keep in mind when joining any branch of our great military, is that ALL services you could perform whether it's electronics maintenance or eating a meal at your local dining facility, are NECESSARY in garrison and in war zones. Therefore, instead of asking what your chances are of going to war, realize that your chances are higher than when you were a civilian, and embrace the experience. If you're unable to embrace the experience of war, then you're in the wrong line of work my friend. Good luck to you.

The Air Force only does 6 month deployments and you would stay on the base all the time, you wouldnt leave.... I have been in the army for 11 years, was in Iraq during the war, my son checked going into the Air Force, he chose the Army instead.... you should be safe if you choose the Air Force. Thats even if you would deploy, the Air Force isnt deploying everyone like the Army does.

Every job in the Air Force will be sent overseas at some point. It is not if, but when. You will not be out fighting, but back at the base doing your job. What job you have does not matter, you WILL be going.

to be honest it all depends on what you mean by the word go
as an electrician or an air tech whaterver they are called, you will be so far back from the front line you wont be able to see it on a map, but you will still be there just not on the front line getting shot at
