I just had a thought come in mind. This is just my doctrine so dont bash on me but if you think about it everything revolves around the president of the church and when it comes down to it, the guidance he gives is just for us at this time and age and is what god currently wants us to be doing. Yes sounds obvious. But I see so many people trying to contradict our teachings with past commandments such as polygamy and the scriptures but say (which will never happen I hope) the president of the church says we are no longer going to read the book of mormon and every scripture is being done away with. We would still follow his councel because all in all he guides the affairs of the church through revelation and gives us the commandments which gods wants us to follow most currently. Just kinda struck a light that there would be no order without our prophet. And if anything happens we always have prayer to confirm wether something is of god or not. love you brother and sisters. Godspeed

I know my comment is pretty far fetched but I dont think its impossible to lose the scriptures without breaking the truth I mean it could be restored back or be withheld really god can do anything. Again this is a very far fetched comment.

Stetson, your thought is very thought-provoking. Yes, the Prophet leads the Church, and he receives revelation to help him lead the Church. I like the quote, I believe from Brigham Young, where he says that God will not allow the Prophet to lead us astray. I don’t remember the exact quote, but that is what it means. In recent years the Prophet has come down on the members on several occasions, telling us that we are not using the Bible and Book of Mormon the way that we should. I am sure it was through his suggestion that our current Gospel Doctrine schedule came to be. And, I am sure it was through him that the Primary and youth Sunday School programs changed to their current schedule. Now, parents and children are studying the same book of Scripture each year. This makes it so much easier for the family to do family scripture study.
When the Prophet gives us instructions, there are those few who murmur and say it is too hard. There will always be those few. There are some who will murmur briefly that it is too hard, but then will decide to listen to the Prophet. And, there are those who will say “Thy will be done”, and follow the Prophet. We do not always know why we are given instructions, but if we follow the Prophet, we will learn the reason why.
Wally, we do not worship the Prophet Joseph Smith. We honor him because he received revelation from God and Jesus Christ and organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We received the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Prophet Joseph. We certainly do not regard him as being higher than Jesus Christ! Heavens, he was a mere man, not God!! We do not reject the Bible, or Jesus Christ. We pray through Jesus Christ, we worship Jesus Christ. We study the life of Jesus Christ as told in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We study the teachings of Jesus Christ as told in the entire New Testament. We study the prophecies regarding Jesus Christ as given to us in the Old Testament.
Matthew, I’ve never heard that it is a sin to wear open toed shoes to Church. I wear sandals to Church all summer. When I lived in FL I wore sandals all year round. I do know that some bishops take it upon themselves to add to the law, much like the Pharisees did in the time of Jesus. I’ve heard from people around the country that have bishops who forbid women/girls to enter the chapel wearing slacks or jeans. Others who forbid women/girls to enter the meetinghouse if they are not wearing a dress/skirt. In some areas women/girls are not allowed to come to church wearing sleeveless dresses! And still others who refuse to allow women/girls to come to church wearing a denim dress or skirt. All of this is personal interpretation, not from the Prophet. The only rules I’ve heard regarding dress coming from Salt Lake is that we should refrain from wearing beach wear to Church on Sundays; we should refrain from being too casual in our dress.
The Prophet today will tell us what Heavenly Father wants us to know today.

I just heard on the news about an Episcopal church leader, the Diocese of San Joaquin in California that decided he wanted to perform gay marriages in his parish.
I immediately thought of the hierarchy that the LDS church has, and that nothing can ever change without the President's, "okay."
The LDS church does hold conferences, even by satellite, to let all the members of the church know and VOTE and support their leadership.
The LDS church has a truly remarkable system and I feel this is how things should be.
(Bishops would never do such a thing, they would be excommunicated, and the church's leadership would come to the church and talk to the congregation about he errors in his teachings. It's just so bizarre the Episcopal church would let it's members dictate the demand for mainstream approval)
God would never allow the President of the church to lead it's people astray. Remember that.

"You're absolutely right; we need a living prophet because times change" someone who posted above.
Just because society changes does not mean that we should change the word of God to coincide with the changing times. God said that he is the Alpha and the Omega so he is timeless and His word lives forever. The idea that new scripture can be written today goes against the last verses of the book of revelation where it strictly warns against doing such things. We don't need a living prophet because we have a living God and it is God whom we should place our trust. That's my opinion....please don't take offense, the lds people I have met have been very nice and have quite a dedication to their faith which should be admired.

"It makes no difference what is written or what anyone has said, if what has been said is in conflict with what the Lord has revealed, we can set it aside. My words, and the teachings of any other member of the Church, high or low, if they do not square with the revelations, we need not accept them. Let us have this matter clear. We have accepted the four standard works as the measuring yardsticks, or balances, by which we measure every man's doctrine. You cannot accept the books written by the authorities of the Church as standards in doctrine, only in so far as they accord with the revealed word in the standard works." -Joseph Fielding Smith (Doctrines of Salvation 3:203).
"If anyone, regardless of his position in the Church, were to advance a doctrine that is not substantiated by the standard Church works, meaning the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, you may know that his statement is merely his private opinion. The only one authorized to bring forth any new doctrine is the President of the Church, who, when he does, will declare it as revelation from God, and it will be so accepted by the Council of the Twelve and sustained by the body of the Church. And if any man speak a doctrine which contradicts what is in the standard Church works, you may know by that same token that it is false and you are not bound to accept it as truth." (President Harold B. Lee, European area conference)

I see where you're going with this. And yes, I agree. We have been counseled that the most important prophet is the current prophet, whoever he is. That's why it's so irritating to me when people will quote Brigham Young and say that we must still believe something he said because he was our prophet. And what they quote is something that he said as Brigham Young the man, not Brigham Young the Prophet of the Lord. ...A friend of mine taught either Seminary or Sunday School for many years and he would always throw his tie over his shoulder and say "Now this is coming from the gospel of Bro. Gieles, but..." when he was going to say something he knew wasn't Gospel, but was more of a commentary. On a lot of the Brigham Young quotes that fly around here I can just see him throwing his tie over his shoulder as he says some of that.
Merry Christmas!

Well first, we do not need books to know God's word.
If for some reason God did tell the prophet no more scriptures, that would be a MAJOR thing I would pray about until I got an answer and I would not be willing to burn my quad right after general conference if he said that.
If anyone follows the prophet so blindly...let them because they're *not* doing what we're told(to pray about almost everything) and they're too blind to recognize that.

You're absolutely right; we need a living prophet because times change. But the prophet's teachings are always consistent with the teachings of previous prophets. That's because God doesn't change. The way we apply principles may be different, but the principles and truths of the gospel are always the same. Best wishes to you and your family.

The problem with having our prophet however, is that he's always adding new sins, and seldom does away with old ones. We used to drink alcohol in church. Today it's a sin to wear open toed shoes to church. In 20 years will it be a sin to wear the color red? The Celestial kingdom is sounding less and less appealing to me.
