Personally I'd rather have a Dobermann.(2 "n"s intentional). I love super intelligent animals and I have been researching them thinking about getting one.
But I have known Rotties who were great dogs too.
Two loyal, courageous breeds. and both have suffered from overbreeding & stigma due to their popularity as THE "tough dog" of the moment - - the Dobe in the 70s and the Rott in the 90s.

I love both of them. I always wanted a Rottweiler and i never ended up getting one. Then my husband bought me a Doberman for our anniversary. Oh i love him so much. He is a great dog and i am very glad that i got him. He is so loyal and i love how he stares at me like there is no one else in his life. He follows me around everywhere i go. When i am sitting on the couch he is right there with me. When i go to bed he goes with me. He leans so hard against me that sometimes i wake up and i have to make him move over cause he almost pushed me out of bed. lol When i am sitting on the couch he is laying on my lap it is so funny. He is a big lap dog and i love it. I still like Rottweilers, but i would have to say that when my Doberman passes i believe that i will get another. Doberman is my choice.

I've never been much of a Doby fan - most that I have seen have been nervous/high strung. Ten years ago, I'd have said a Rottie without hesitation but then they got popular and too many low knowledge breeders diluted the gene pool. I guess of the two, I'd still prefer a Rottie. Perhaps, just like German Shepherd Dogs, one has to find a specialized registry (I like the USA) or import them from eastern Europe to get a really stable one that isn't a Poodle in disguise.

I guess it is a matter of preference but I would have to say I would rather have a rottie. I have 1 rottie and have had two in the past and I find that they are the most loyal, loving companions. A rottie makes a wonderful companion and seems to act more like a human than a dog.

Way back when, I brought a dog home for the family (and me, of course!) ;-)
My Dad, after surveying the situation (the rest of the kids had already fallen in love with the pup, and returning the thing was NOT an option), hauled me aside and gave me some advice:
"NEVER" get anything that eats!"
The dog, neither of the two breeds mentioned, provide some fifteen years of faithful service, and even the Old Man took to the thing.
I have known folks who loved Rottweilers, and folks who swore by Dobermans. Both, IMHO, are good mutts, if treated with respect, and raised to act properly.
Make a choice, and remember the big secret: If you want the dog to "take" to the family, then "take" to the dog. You won't want for much.

I'm biased because I love my Rottie, her personality is family oriented, but protective and she's very smart. I think she looks powerful because of the muscular physique.
Our friends have a Doberman, a spayed female, and she has the same type of personality as our rottie. Kind of like a slimmed down version of our dog with a longer nose and tall pointy ears.
Both make excellent companions with proper care, training, feed, affection, and veterinary care.
Best wishes

I think I would have the doberman... I used to have a dog, Lady, who was a mix with some doberman in her (her mom was purebred black lab, dad was a mix). Both are great breeds which have had a bad rap lately due to irresponsible pet owners. Irresponsible pet owners who do not properly train, socialize, care, pick up after, and otherwise do not raise their dogs properly really piss me off.

Rottie. No Contest. Dobermans are SUPER possessive.

Depends on the individual personality of the dog, they are both gorgeous! Although i would never dock or crop either a dobe or a rotti - this is a cruel act as it reduces the ability for the dog to communicate with other canines.
