Its not called a period but instead an estrus cycle or heat cycle. The first usually occurs around 6 months of age. It would be best to get your female spayed close to this age BEFORE she has her first estrus cyle. You will eliminate the possibilty of ovarian cancer and also the possiblity of impregnation.

They don't have a period like human females do. They go into heat, which is just another way of saying they're horny. Getting them fixed (which is recommended by vets everywhere as well as Humane Society, etc) takes care of that. It can occur anytime between 6-12 months.

Coming on heat, or coming into season....

I agree with deltadawn but would add that most vets say that speying/neutering is safe around 6months... the earlier the better as this reduces accidental pregnancies and unwanted pups (and we all know what happens to them). I have known dogs as young as 5 months to be pregnant!

Dogs don't have "periods" they go into heat. The first one can happen anywhere from six to fourteen months in age, and lasts for three weeks. She will probably bleed the whole three weeks (mine did). Then she will go into heat again in about six month.
