Check out the Cannondale's they are awesome and you can get them for a decent price, I got mine off ebay for about $600.00 and it was practically new. A lot of the bikes on ebay are from people who bought them and then put them in their garage to sit untouched.

There are many good road bikes for under $1K, especially if you are willing to buy last year's model. I bought a 2006 bike at the end of the 2007 model year and saved $600 off the list price.
The bicycle business is so competitive these days that any two bikes at the same price point are very likely to be equivalent values. What is important is the way the bike fits you and the way it feels. At the $1000 level, all the component groups work reliably and well, so don't get hung up on that. Ignore brand names, marketing hype, and fancy brochures. Test ride the bikes. Go to many different shops and ride all the brands. One bike will feel like it fits you much better than all the others. You will sense this very quickly after sitting on the bike and riding it for just a few minutes. Buy that bike. It is the one you will enjoy the most.

If you shop more than one bike shop, you should find a last years model bike for under $1000 that is aluminum and carbon (fork and stays), good wheels, and either the complete 105 group -or- Sram, double or triple ring crank. Let's see brands... Well, in my area I could buy a Trek, Bianchi, Specialized, Raleigh, Fuji, Schwinn, and Cannondale. Now a couple of those won't have the carbon seat stays, but you will get a fine entry level performance bicycle.

Yes there are loads, I won't name any brands 'cos in this price range they are all pretty much the same.
If you're buying new, then expect a carbon fork and at least Tiagra Gearing! More importantly is the fit! And your local bike shop will sort this for you.
If you're thinking of buying second hand, then by all means trawl the usual outlets, sizing may be more of a problem if you are buying online though.
If I were you I would factor in the cost of a new saddle and some decent tyres, even if buying new, as these are the small mods that make a bike better to ride.
best of luck.

I'll tell you what I tell everyone, DO NOT BUY A BIKE ON THE INTERNET. Go to a local shop and get fit properly. It will make your riding experience so much more enjoyable. Tell the employee what kind of riding you want to do. Do you want to race short Crit races? Do you want to ride Centuries (100+ mile rides)? Do you want to bicycle commute? Do you just want to toodle around on the weekends? All are factors that will affect what kind of bike you get.
There are lots of bikes that are good in that price range. All of these companies have models that are in your price range. Here are a few worth looking at.

???? You don't want a good quality road bike, or you don't want to spend more than $1,000?
I think you should find some bikes around 800 or 900 that are worth it if you look around. go to different bike shops and see what they offer.

I don't bike but I live in Portland, OR which is like the biking epicenter so I know quite a few bikers. My best friend has a Kona that was under a thousand but about that. Whenever she takes it anywhere people compliment her on it.
