Why do you own the word yet don't want to be refered to as "Mormon's". I could understand it better if you hadn't gone out of the way to make certain other's don't profit off of something that you obviously aren't proud to be refered to as.

cassandra, it get's confusing when one person says, "were LDS, you know Mormons" and then someone else says, We preder not to be called Mormons, rather LDS. See how it can get confusing. I also noticed that if I ask a question with the initials LDS, I generally only get LDS responding because everyone else knows y'all as Mormons, see. But I like your answer, it makes sense to me.

I personally don't have a problem with being called Mormon, but I hope that people will know that Jesus Christ is the Head of our Church. Mormon was a prophet, but we don't worship Mormon. It kind of clears things up if people realize that we belong to the Church of Jesus Christ.

The church owns the trademark probably due to a web page a few years ago that bore the name Mormon.com and had x-rated stuff on it. To protect the church from such unscrupulous offenders and to not confuse those that think there would be a connect, the church acquired ownership.

Those that call us Mormon, while not personally offensive to me, allows others to avoid using the official name of the church, that is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It is a lot easier to call Mormons non-Christian if you avoid using the official name.

partially this comes from the confusion created with the several groups who call themselves 'mormon', or who are referred to by the press as 'mormon' - who misrepresent LDS values and ideas.....like Warren Jeffs group, the TLC, or Rulon Allred's group. LDS 'mormons' get confused with and lumped in with polygamists etc.

I sort of remember some years ago when the LDS church leaders actually gave a little push towards calling ourselves only LDS instead of mormons because of this confusion, but I could be wrong.

It's a case of people speaking for more than just themselves, and particularly people who would prefer not to be spoken for.

With members of the LDS church, being referred to as Mormon is a personal preference. Some don't like it because they find it derogatory, just as some Wiccans don't like being called Witches because it's considered derogatory. Many others don't mind the term Mormon though; usually people prefer it and use it more often than LDS because more people recognize the term Mormon verses LDS. Similarly, some Wiccans even PREFER to be called Witches over anything else.

Just personal preferences/aversions, nothing more.

In the United States, the LDS Church has applied for a trademark on "Mormon" as applied to religious services; however, the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected the application, stating that the term "Mormon" was too generic, and is popularly understood as referring to a particular kind of church, like "Presbyterian" or "Methodist", rather than a service mark

Do your reasearch next time.

Mormon is offensive to call us that because last time I checked, I am not a prophet of God and it's less sacred when you use it to refer to 13 million people, and not to refer to Mormon.

Do you call all the Muslims "Muhammads"?

Just saw your edit to Cassandra. When you say LDS, some people have *no* clue what you're talking about, so we let them know(in their termonology) of who we are.

Just don't call me late for dinner.

The church has requested reporters and such to use the full name in articles they write. If I am talking to someone 'Mormon' is a lot easier. A new neighbor ask where we were going Sunday morning. 'Mormon church' made it a lot clearer than the full name or 'LDS'. At least we are not the 'Brother of Jaredites'.

If you remember your church history, the members of the church, were called ""Mormons"" by their enemies.
And the people who put bounties on LDS heads, like the governor of Missouri, was surely an enemy.
Those same enemies chased them state to state, killing them state by state.
So after being called ""Mormons'' for so many years, we are trying to get away from that painful association. from our earlier history.
So why would you think that it is such a strange thing?
The LDS church doesn't need to use anything, or anyone to gain profit.

What is it, that you are so afraid to come right out and say?
So say it,and stop making veiled comments!

Peter, "Mormon" is not offensive to the overwhelming majority of the LDS church. It's what they usually call themselves, to say nothing of the Choir.

What a dork!

This sounds familiar, lemme get this straight.... They don't want to be called "Mormons," yet their primary book is called "The Book of Mormon?" How odd.... :/
