I am a Child Development major and take care of a 6 year old autistic boy. I have learned that it is for the parent's sanity as well as for the well-being of the child that he get tested in all developmental areas. The earlier you catch any disorder or disease, the better.
The reason behind this is that up until the age of 3, children (at least in California) can get involved in programs and social services which are free in helping to diagnose and treat the disorder, whatever it may be.
As soon as the parents have a record of any sort of special need the child has, the better it will be for them to receive services and government help for future treatments and therapies. If nothing is wrong, they lose nothing except the anxiety of wondering if there is something wrong with their baby.
At two years old, children should be making simple two-word sentences, even at least one word.
Do not intend to diagnose, but advice your friend to go to a doctor and get referred to a specialist who deals with Autism. Autism has been known to develop in children who are 2 - 3 years old.

What does "play like a normal child" mean?Hang out with the family;observe carefully whether there's someone who answers for the child, does the child socialize with same age kids? Does he point or grunt when he wants something? Check out the relationship between Mom & Dad ~ who talks? Who listens?Do the parents converse with the child?Normal or baby-talk? Do they read out loud to him?Is this a day-care child, or at home? Does the boy spend much time outside? Autism shows itself in many ways with symptoms of irregular behaviors. My 2nd son resisted speaking because he didn't have to;his older brother & father actually stifled him by their interpreting what he wanted & delivered. When they stopped, my son not only jabbered non-stop, but developed his speech and vocabulary skills lightning fast. **Could there be a hearing impairment?Learn more about autism & observe. .

I have a little step brother that is now 3 years old and had the same problem when her was age of 2. We waited tell he got into preschool and Shir enough he was diagnosed with autism. That women is right that all children age at different times but not this late. i would get him checked just to be safe. The earlier he is diagnosed the early he can get help from speech therapists get special attention at preschool and get him started on having a normal life.

Don't try to diagnose him. Yes, it's normal. Sometimes children are just late talkers. Just keep him stimulated and make sure he is surrounded by language. Perhaps get him into a play group. If he doesn't talk at all by around three, I would take him to a speech therapist. You'd be amazed at what can change in a couple of months.

A couple had a boy who never talked. They went to doctor after doctor and sought specialist all over the world. No one could find anything wrong.
One day the six-year old boy was having lunch and blurted out, "This soup sucks, take it away. I won't eat it!"
The parents were shocked and said, "Oh my gawd, You can talk. Why haven't you said anything before now?"
The boy replied, "Everything's been okay until now."

It could be normal. If he doesn't talk soon, they should try getting his hearing checked. A lot of children are late talkers that have problems with their hearing. This can even happen with chronic ear infections. I wouldn't be too concerned yet!

sometimes kids are late to talk, but the mom could take the child to his pediatrician to discuss it.
he could have a hearing problem, preventing him from learning. even in one ear... or it might be one of 100 different things.
best to consult a doc.
