These are two very different weapons, one designed to be used by unskilled ill-educated people to spray bullets and the other was designed for use by people who have achieved a proficient grade in marksmanship.

The Ak47 now the Ak74 has been the preferred weapon of choice by the poor man's armies and freedom-fighters around the globe due to its mass production and availability.
Short on accuracy but a good weapon in urban combat or jungle settings where the combat range is well under 300 yards.
And has the Ak rather than the M14 is being seen in more areas around the globe then it has proven itself to be the more reliable than the M14.

For Schlick:

"The AK was made for Eastern block soldiers who due to a poor diet are usually smaller then Americans "

That has to be the most ludicrous statement made this week, coming from a country which has two thirds of its population classed as obese!!

Just because the Eastern Block countries did not have "fast food restaurants" to pig out in, it has not made them smaller, in fact the diet in many of the Eastern Bloc countries is far healthier in quality than the Western diet, you suggest that the Eastern Europeans are pygmies, and that is laughable do you know how long it takes genetics to make changes to the human frame? hundreds of years and not 50!!
In many Balkan Nations the general height is slightly smaller than the average Westerner or American.

Another point is that a weapon with a shorter stock and a pistol grip trigger assembly and front pistol stock which can be found on some AK variants is a positive aid in controlling the weapon when being fired particularly in the semi-auto mode. (look at the so called "Bullpup" designs like the SA80, Styer, and the current French FAMAS for examples.)

The AK... you can dump a hand full of sand in the damn thing and it won't misfire. It's not as accurate as the M-14 but it will still fire a round. In urban settings I'd want the M-14. Desert and jungle, I'd want an AK. The M-14 is a better rifle, but the AK is an extreamly simple and hard to fail design.

i burst off the brim here with the HK416 coming to techniques. it is predicated off the M4, which all of us understand is precise, yet is piston-pushed, and has been examined to fire an entire mag while at as quickly as pulled from dirt, sand, and water without malfunction. The civilian variations, the MR556 and MR762 (firing the 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO, respectively) have been rumored to be in the U. S. around 2010, so it would desire to be a quick time in the previous that occurs. i became basically assuming you wanted some thing such as an AK/M16. yet an option decision, for some grand, is the Zastava M76 - based on the AK format, it is used in militia purposes as an prolonged-variety rifle. no longer almost as precise as a bolt-action rifle, yet will do greater suitable than the accepted AK at variety. of path you may desire to dodge all that and choose for the tried-and-examined shown classics, the M1 Garand or the M1A. the two will shoot as precise as bolt action rifles, and be as good as an AK.

The AK is hands down a more reliable weapon for shooting but it lacks the accuracy of the 14 or the 16. The AK was made for Eastern block soldiers who due to a poor diet are usually smaller then Americans (thanks McDonald's) so the butt stock of the 47 is much smaller then any American rifle. So when shooting it is much harder to get the proper cheek to stock position you need when precision shooting, but if you want to just indiscriminately put rounds downrange and not worry about maintenance the 47 is for you.

The AK has proven itself to be more reliable in any environment. You can bury it in sand, dirt, run over it with a vehicle, and just plain abuse it and it will very quickly be ready to go at a moments notice.

AK for everything. but i'd use M14 if in desert for accuracy and higher muzzle velocity, but only 20 round mag.
