I want to follow in the footsteps of H. Cartier-Bresson and capture The Decisive Moment.

Seems to me I'll be more likely to accomplish this if I don't use a camera that looks like a bazooka!

I know HC-B used a Leica but they're a bit spendy for me.

I've assembled a list of affordable cameras that I hope won't scare the bejeezus out of the locals.

The only criteria? Must be 35mm *film* and have swappable lenses.

Which would you choose? Or none of the above?

1. Voigtlander Bessa R3A ... grey
2. Nikon F80 ... black (can't find a silver one)
3. Oly OM-2 ... chrome
4. Minolta CL/CLE
5. Contax G-2

TIA for your help!

Since you mentioned Henri Cartier-Bresson, I have to say he is one of my most favorite photographers of all time.

Do you prefer AF bodies, or full manual? Do you have any previous lenses for an SLR body?

The one good thing about older SLR camera bodies is that they are very small, compared to a DSLR, but they weigh a lot. I prefer Nikon, but Pentax, Minolta, and Zeiss make some very good cameras as well. Anything from Nikon is going to be good. I use the N8008s and a 70-300mm for candids. I've heard excellent word about the Pentax K1000, but have never been able to actually use on. Minolta has the XD-7 or the CL-E. Pretty much anything from Zeiss is going to be good, just like Leica. But I just remembered that they cost thousands of dollars. Oh well, Minolta made the early Leica R series, so that must say something.

Actually, if you are trying to capture natural photos of anyone who will not allow you to photo them, or have taboos against having pictures taken, use a 90 degree lens. It looks like a regular lens, but has a mirror so that you can take candid pictures easily.

Minolta 7s II, Argus C3, or Canon G III QL.

Also consider a 120 Twins Lens Reflex.

EDIT:

Oops! Changable lens! CLE or G2 is your best bet for image quality. Actually a Leica IIIF is very affordable. And everyone will mistake you for a tourist. Check into that.

EDIT:

F4. One of my favorites, but is not great for clandestine photography; huge, has mirror flap, and screams "professional". Stay with a rangefinder.

What about a miniture Minox, not 35mm, but very good for Spy work.

Minolta x700 or nikon F4 are my picks.
