I know of someone who smokes marijuana, because they think that it's good for them. But in reality, marijuana is illegal due to the fact that it obviously does more harm than good. I've wondered how much harm marijuana does to a person & what parts of the body it actually harms.

Alcohol does the exact same thing as marijuana, it has the same effects and is used for the same reasons. And yet, alcohol is legal while marijuana is not? I don't smoke marijuana, I never will again, but alcohol and marijuana both cause the same mind altering effects and people use them both for the same reason: to become numb and stupid, and to forget about the everyday reality they face in their lives. I don't understand why its illegal. Make both illegal or make both legal. But anyways, if you want to know what marijuana does to you, just look at the effects from alcohol.

Marijuana doesn't do any harm. Traditionally it has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years. It is completely non-addictive, has no harmful side effects (unlike most legal pharmaceutical drugs), and is impossible to overdose on. If you are worried about your lungs you can eat it or drink it, but a scientist (i can't remember his name, look for the article in the Alternative Medicine magazine) recently discovered that THC has the ability to destroy cancer cells in you lungs before they start forming. This scientist was out to prove that marijuana was bad for you but ended up disproving himself. Marijuana will not cause harm to any part of your body, even your brain, and is very important to many critically ill people. It is one remedy that has worked for them when all else has failed. Sometimes things are wrongly illegal for reasons other than concern for public health.

Edit: I thought I should add the effects to short term happen ONLY while you are actually high. Once your high wears off, your short term memory returns to normal. Also not everyone is effected by pot in the same way, (not every one gets lazy while they are high) I know people who when they smoke become very focused on accomplishing things like, cleaning their house, or finishing some long neglected project.

Marijuana is not harmful to your health and it does not cause cancer. Actually people who smoke it have a slightly less chance of getting cancer then people who don't
Also Marijuana has never killed anyone, you hear every day about somebody killing someone cause they were driving drunk. But have you ever heard of someone killing someone because they were stoned or on weed? Long-term marijuana use can harm brain cells, but doesn't make you retarded or anything. Also marijuana smoke has been known to cleanse the lungs and help prevent serious lung diseases.

If you think about it, marijuana does more good to your body then harm. Occasional use of the drug is ok. I know someone who smokes pot occasinally and their perfectly fine. I even know people who are total potheads and there is nothing seriously wrong with them. Another thing is that marijuana is not a gateway drug, the people i know who smoke it told me they've never felt the urge to try harder drugs like herion or cocaine.

Marijuana is illegal due to many other reasons, not because it's harmful. If that was the case, cigarettes would be illegal as well...No harmful effects to the body are proven (yet) however the biggest effect is emphysema on the lungs, and possibly cancer (not proven though) and it makes people really lazy...However I've meet a wealthy business man, a doctor, a teacher, and several other grown up adults who have been smoking since they were teens, and they all have been successful

Its actual not as harmful as people stereotype it as.I mean common...it has countless medical benefits that even anti-marijuana people would admit to. it ony became illegal in 1937 or 1938 because it was believed to elevate crime rate and deaths when really there has never been a death directly linked to marijuana use. Crack, Cocaine, Alcholhol, Heroin, Meth (all manmade and all bad an CAN mess someone up). Marijuana is just a naturally grown plant not even messed wit by man eccept if its been laced.

hope the answer helped.

The long term effects of marijuana use are not clearly defined in any medical study that I know of. I would venture that the damage would depend on the method of delivery. The chemical within the plant (THC) can be ingested in many ways. Each having it's own set of risks. Most of which carry the same amount of risk as sleeping on a hard mattress or drinking from a public water fountain.

Without a doubt the worse thing that can happen from using marijuana is getting busted.

It was origionally banned not because it is "Dangerous" but because of Anti-Mexican feelings at the time.

Alcohol is 100X more dangerous then weed... Not that weed is good for you but alcohol is SUPER bad for you...

Watch the History Channel Doc's on Drugs... Most of the time anything that gets put on the Ban List is added for Political Reason more then any type of scientific reason...

Just look at Cig's and Booze... Both have no real medical value... Both cause death and distruction wherever they are used... Yet BOTH are still legal because of the profits.

With weed it all comes down to moderation... JUST like everything else in life...

If you take too much Tylanol then it will kill you...
If you drink too much booze it will hurt your whole body!!
If you smoke weed every day it affects your brain...

Smoking weed on a Friday now and then won't make you want to go out and start smoking crack... It won't give you cancer... it won't kill brain cells...

Drinking alcohol on a Friday now and then won't make you an alcoholic... Won't kill your kidneys...

Addiction is caused because of over use leading to dependance... It doesn't matter what substance you choose to over use!!

Marijuana does not do more harm then good... if used in moderation!!!

Look at the history of all drugs, especially Marijuana, and you will see how the illegality of weed is 100% propaganda. (No exageration!!)

It is not illegal because it does more harm than good. If that was true, then alcohol and tobacco would be illegal too. Smoking the herb does mess up your lungs though. It also makes you happy to do nothing with your life except watch cartoons, play video games and eat Frosted Flakes or some other equally delicious cereal.

Don't get me wrong, I love the herbs, but people are more productive when they are not high. Notice I didn't say stupid. Weed doesn't make you dumb, it just makes you content to sit on your @ss and do jack sh!t. People that aren't high get bored from doing jack sh!t. This may or may not lead to doing something with your life. It all depends on the individual. I know plenty of people that aren't high, but are still f*ck ups.

The worst side effect is probably messing up your lungs and hearing your little brother or sister cry because someone ate all of their cereal.

They say your brain, but I've graduated from college smoking weed to actually help me study. I am now a Registered nurse with my Bachelors! The only side effects I had was my lips darkened and my eyes got yellow. I am now clean, I have been clean for a year and my lips are more pink and my eyes aren't yellow anymore. So smoke at your own risk I say.

Marijuana harms the brain...it releases little reseptors to the brain and it blocks these little recievers in the brain (if that makes any sense) which cause you to think slower and makes you use more of your brain...it takes a person who smokes marijuana longer to answer a question on a test rather than a person who doenst smoke marijuana...bottom line you shouldnt do it...it really does harm you..and one of the most important parts of your body...look up pictures of brain cat scans on the internet...look up a normal persons brain and then a marijuanna smoking persons brain theres a difference
