I had that on a blued revolver that sat in a drawer too long. I washed it with four-oh steel wool and dishwashing detergent. That took care of it, but I had some shiny white steel that needed some re-bluing. The gun shop had some chemicals to do that, but it's not like before. However, it's a lot better than the rust.
Good luck and Merry Christmas!!!

If its just light surface rust wd-40 with a scouring pad did wonders for my barrel. Just spray a small amount on the scouring pad and scrub lightly. Then wipe down with a paper towel. Rust wiped away with ease. Scouring pads aren't metal or steel so u don't have to worry about scraping of the blued finish. If there are little spots left over this means the rust ate through and u need to keep an eye on it to make sure the rust doesn't come back or take it to get refinished. :)

Simply use 0000 steel wool and some oil to rub off the rust. Once you have it rubbed off, touch up the spot where the rust was using a cold blue that is readily available from any sporting goods store. The 0000 steel wool and oil won't hurt the finish on the metal of your gun but it will remove any light rust. After touching up th espot with the cold blue, wipe on a light coat of oil and you are done.

Before using steel wool, to remove ( and can damage the bluing ) , try tasking a standard #2 pencil, expose some if the graphite ( lead ) & rub it over the rusted area, I have did this, with surface rust, that dadn't pitted the metal.
then oil the area real good & see if the rust has been removed, if not, steel wool, would be the next thing to try

#000 or #0000 Steel Wool and some LIGHT machine oil....
Rub the light rusted area lightly. The idea is to remove the rust but not the blued finish in the process...Wipe the dissolved rust and oil off with a soft dry cotton cloth or towel. If the rust is just surface rust, this method will remove all of it. If there is surface pitting ( Tiny craters on the finish surface, then the rust has eaten thru the blued finish to the metal below) Either way this method will remove the surface rust, but you will have to keep a regular check on the area and keep it oiled thereafter to prevent the rust from coming back..........Good Luck.

If it's just "flash" rust that isn't that stubborn and is just on the surface, just normal cleaning oil is fine. Mine looks like that at the end of the season every year because of the nasty weather I hunt in. Get it home, punch the bore, hit the outside with a toothbrush, leave a thin coat of oil on there and she's ready for the next outing.
