CNN ran a story about an Internet Hoax that led to a deadly shooting. A jury is now deliberating in the case of a 53 year old man who shot his son's friend. Not long ago, a Missouri girl committed suicide when an adult posed as a teen and badgered her to death. This is getting out of hand, and the Internet is turning into a Stalker's Playground. Hoaxes, jokes, intimidation, threats, bullying, bashing, lieing.....that can cause harm to innocent victims. How can this be stopped ?

the Internet in these cases is not much different from the old fashioned gossip mill. Used to be a young woman's reputation could be ruined almost overnight by one person who was angry and willing to lie to High Heaven.

Tough to control that, and just as tough now.

They need to create laws with strict penalties if the hoxers can be caught. I think this is going to happen. You can't stop all hoaxes, but it will certainly let people understand that they can always be straced by their ISP and busted.

people can learn to stop believing what they read on the internet. just like orson wells "war of the worlds" when people commited suicide thinking we were being invaded by aliens. there is no foreign lottery that you have won, there is no rich oil man trying to get his money out of mogadishu, etc etc etc. I can't believe the number of people who are absolutely sure it is a scam, but just HAVE to try.
