I know someone who is planning to enlist in the Navy...He wants to know what would be his average savings in 4 years of active duty.

He says the average pay is around 1300 every 15th day..Is he correct?

Do you think he can save a lot of money?

When he first starts out making $1300 a pay day isnt possible. The Basic pay on the charts is for the month, not per payday. Then there is the deductions of Income Tax, Social Security, Medicare, Life Insurance, GI Bill that can take out a big chunk of that. Also if he does go on a ship, the Sea Pay wont be much to begin with.

As for what he will save it will depend on what his expenses are, does he have a car? if so then he will have to pay for insurance. Then there is how much away from the galley he will eat which can add up, plus phone calls home, gifts, port calls in which to stay in a hotel, things like that. Those can add up to a lot and if he doesn't have a budget, stick to it then it is possible he can have a nice amount in savings when he gets out.

I thought I could. The truth is that living the Navy life is very hard. He will spend a lot of time in places where things are very expensive. The stress will cause a need for a lot of expensive partying. If you are doing it to save money then forget it. If you want to see world. Well maybe just the Persian Gulf and one vacation in Europe or the Seychelles a year than do it. It is a lot like a gym membership. Hundreds of people join them and pay dues, but you might never meet anybody in the gym that really goes from fat and flabby to buff. You will only see them on TV.

Oh and he thinks we are paid a little more than double what we are.

No its less than 1300 every month. I was in the navy for four years and came out with the clothes on my back.
E-1 with less than 4 months of service per month $1203.90

if he lives in Barracks/on board the ship, eats all his meals in the galley, never once going out to a bar, and never goes into town when they pull into ports, he can save TONS of money.

Depending on what paygrade he goes in at and how fast he makes rank, he can expect several pay raises. as long as he doesn't pull stupid Sailor tricks and buys a flashy sports car, or eat out every third meal and insist on having every gadget in the universe he can easily save ten thousand dollars or more.

That is about the pay per MONTH not every payday.
You can be E-5 with 4 years of service and still not earn that much every payday.

It depends on how quick he makes rank, and how high he goes up. If he goes overseas he can save more money because he'll be getting cola (cost of living allowance) in addition to his regular pay.
