The Hebrew word "nabî'" which means prophet is not one who foretells the future. The Greek "prophetes" (from pro-phanai, to speak for, or in the name of someone) corresponds to the meaning of "nabî'."

To be a prophet is to speak for God. St. John the Baptist is considered to be the last of the Old Testament prophets. He is the bridge from the Old to the New. He did not attempt to provide a time table for the Messiah (Jesus).

If we go by the true meaning of the word prophet, then yes, there are people speaking on God's behalf. They are not best selling authors predicting the Second Coming. They are quiet men and women helping people learn to read, digging wells, comforting the sick, and sometimes even use words.

Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord God will do nothing but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the Prophets."

That Prophet would be Gordon B. Hinckley.
