I filed one too many exemptions for a child deduction so I received a 1040X to amend this. I know I will have to fill out lines 1-5 and 25-32 on the back.
1) Can I skip lines 6-10 if nothing changed?
2) Can I skip lines 11-18 if nothing changed?
3) Can I skip lines 19-24 if nothing changed?
4) Line 6 (if I need to complete) - How do you check the method originally used (I attached a Sched. D to my original, so is that it?) and what do I write in which column?
Thanks in advance!

I assume I should write Sch. D in column C, and fill in A and B numerically or leave it blank?

while your exemption change starts on line 4, the lines 5-15 could also change....thus they need to be done.

It's hard to believe that your income didn't go up and a child deduction often includes other credits such as the child tax credit.

line 6 refers to how you calculated your tax bill.

Put table if you looked up the tax in the tax table.
put sch d if you used the schedule d worksheet.
put qdcgtw if you used the qualified dividend worksheet.

Follow Boston's advice. I don't think you will "get it" otherwise.

for line 6, the "sch d" goes to the LEFT of column A.

line 1---20,000---------0-----20,000
line 2-----5,150---------0-------5,150
line 3---14,850---------0------14,850
line 4-----6,600---(3300)------3,300
line 5-----8,250--- 3300------11,550
line 6--------865--- 330---------1,195
<----you put the "sch d" to the LEFT of column A.
line 7--------865----(865)-------------0
line 8-----------0----1195--------1,195
line 9-----------0------0------------------0
line 10---------0----1195---------1,195
line 11------500------0---------------500
line 12
line 13------135---(135)----------------0
line 14
line 18----------------------------------500
line 19----------------------------------635
line 20---------------------------------(135)
line 21---------------------------------1330

Lines 1, 2 and 3 are unchanged. After than the change in exemptions triggers changes all the way down. The left Column is how it was on the original return, the right one is the correction and the middle is the difference. You will have to figure your new tax liablility on the same schedule as the old.

The best way to complete Form 1040-X is to complete a new tax return from the top down. Now lay that next to your copy of the one that you filed and it will be immediately apparent what lines you need to fill in and what the amounts need to be. Do NOT attach a copy of that new return to the 1040-X, but DO attach copies of any new or changed schedules to it.
