Simple as that, who do you think was the better heavyweight? To make it easier, let's say that both fought each other in their primes.
I gotta go with my man, Clay. Joe Louis had a killer right, but Ali was quick and would've danced circles around Joe.

Ali dominated a much tougher heavyweight division.

Got to say, Ali wins. I honestly think he would have had more trouble with Tyson that with Joe. Not to dis Louis, but that 40's crowd was as blind to his failings as the 70's hip sportswriters (Mailer et al.) were to Ali's, But even though Ali's being the greatest was self-proclaimed, it might well have been true. He was so fast, so versatile, so indominatable. I think Louis would have quit before he did (Tyson, almost certainly, as soon as he realized Ali was still there.) The only man as mentally tough (maybe tougher)than ali was Joe Frazier. I say ali makes Joe chase him for four rounds, then he starts in on him. It would look a little like the Cleavland Williams fight (Joe better than Williams natch) where Joe can't get set to dliver the boom. Keeps following gets frustrated, later round clay goes to work. No knock out, then Ali wins decision. Only chance would be Joe catches being too cute. Possible, Joe did have a pretty cool head, Still I say alie wins. Fight stopped in the eight.....Crap, now I really want to see that fight. Heaven, I guess. Then Dempsey Louis after that what a wonderful world!

I like Ali but there is no way he could have beat Joe louis, Joe was very strong and quick with his hands: not so much with his feet, he was also a very smart fighter, and he loved fighting inside, he would beat Ali's body and when that goes so does the head, just watch the fight when Joe frazier buttoned Ali's lip

Wrong on both counts. The Greatest heavyweight of all time was Rocky Marciano. He knocked Joe Louis out of the ring and into retirement and, if Joe Frazier and Henry Cooper could knock Ali down then I have no doubt that 'The Rock' would've blasted him into the front row. He had tremendous punching power in both hands, a style that gave most fighters absolute fits and one of the best chins in all of boxing history. He was also always in supreme, top physical condition - something I can't say for most of today's top heavyweights. No one ever beat him and I can't think of too many in all of boxing history who would've even had a chance. He retired at 49 (43) - 0, with a wake of devasted heavyweights behind him. That says it all.

The greatest heavyweight in his mind was Muhammad Ali. The greatest heavyweight of all time was Joe Louis. He took on all comers, from his very first fight, never was a braggart, tended to his business, and remained champion for several years. He, unfortunately, had managers who took more than their share of the money . At the end he was a greeter at one of the Las Vegas Casinos.

Ali by unanimous decision. Just look at the Joe Louis vs Billy Conn fight. Billy was ahead on point when he got cocky and trade with Joe at the end of the fight. If he box, he could of upset Joe. Muhammad was a taller, faster version of Billy Conn since Billy was a light heavyweight, and Ali is too smart to take the chance of trading with Joe so Ali speed and reach advantage will prevail.

Ali. No doubt. Louis was a great fighter... the best of his generation, but Ali was fast and slick and would have danced circles around Joe.

Ali, no doubt. There has never really been anyone like him. His style broke all the rules - low hands, backing up straight, sticking his head into an opponent's power zone, dancing left and right, the rope a dope, pitty-pat multiple punches with both hands and then backing out to avoid the crusher or coming in to pull the opponent's neck in from behind. It was all self-taught. Louis was an outstanding boxer but all orthodox. In a bout at their best - Ali in eight or better.
