In 1933, my grandfather died when my father (the youngest of 3 brothers) was 1 year old. My grandmother's sister moved in, and continued to live there when my grandmother remarried. They had another son before my grandmother died when my dad was 15. So there they all lived ... two unrelated adults (in separate bedrooms), raising 3 boys who neither had born, and 1 whose father lived there, but for whom the other adult was simply a maternal aunt.

Does this qualify as a family. In my mind, yes.

When my partner of almost 12 years died of cancer, I had spent the last 3 years of our life together caring for him, going to every doctor's appointment, every chemotherapy session, every surgery, injecting him with medicine, etc. We were a gay couple whose acceptability as a family ranged broadly in our own families and in our community. We wanted to be married, and we celebrated our annual anniversary, but he died 7 weeks before we could have gotten a civil union in Vermont.

Family is about intimacy & commitment to one another. As our divorce rate and child abandonment statistics indicate, those who cannot follow through on commitments to one another do not fulfill the requirements of family. Yet through love and follow-through, those whose bloodlines or legal status show either a tenuous or absent relationship can display the strongest of family bonds.

A family doesn't have to be a mother and father follow by kids. A family is when people that loves you because of who you are. Your friends can be your family. Those who shower you with love and express concern about your well being, these are you closest family.

The basic mom and dad with kids shares each other love, by expressing it deeply. A family prays together stays together in the twinkle in God's heart. God bless.

Love... I am not blood related or even share the same surname with the majority of those I call family. We love each other, support each other, and would give our lives for one another. When that type of bond exists, you are a family.

A group of people who may share common ancestry and blood. Or it may be a group of friends, a married couple and children. Or it could be a group of people brought together by tragedy. Organ donation, similar interests. A family can be most any group today. Any group in which love, respect and trust exists.
