There has been some dispute about that. The idea comes from the prohibition of images . The prohibition is aimed at making sure people do not worship images like they have done with idols. I know idol worship is more complex than that but for the purpose of this particular question I am not goimg any deeper. This is why there are no pictures or portrayals of the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) or any of the other prophets in Islam nor are there any portrayals of God.

No it isn't forbidden. According to the Wahabis (aka salafis) it is though - life's gotta be pretty rough for them.
The pictures, in this case meaning photos, are not forbidden. They are merely an image captured on film. It's not like someone sat down and "created" it. Now as far as drawing human beings and having such an intention that you can create as well as God - then yeah that's forbidden. The issue of pictures in islam refers specifically to statues/figures as referred to by the Arabic terms in the traditions of the Prophet(saws). Basically it's all about the interpretation. Some people strictly believe you can't have any pictures whatsoever in your house if they have figures in them because then angels won't come to the house. This is not the case at all - but it is their narrow interpretation. General consensus applies to those figures - i.e. statues (in arabic). Anyway I could go on and on.... but you get the point.

No, you are right in some sense. There are many Muslims who forbid you to take their picture. I've been to the Middle East several times and have been yelled at, threatened, cursed at, etc. for taking pictures. They believe you can see inside their soul when you take their picture and that's forbidden.

Since I have some pictures of my Muslim friends, I'll have to say no on that one.

However the amish generally don't allow themselves to be photographed.

I assure you: it is not haram to take pictures. it is haram to entice one's image, although. Muslims take pictures each and all the time. No concerns. there isn't something interior the Qur'an announcing how shooting is haram. :)

Of the prophet, yes. They riot and kill over that. I guess that makes them and their religion barbaric.
