i am a vet assistant, but still dont know everything. but here we go. my dog loves squeeky toys. well i wasnt home, but my mom gave him a toy. he chewed just about all of it up. there were some, and i mean SOME pieces left. but they were small. he even ate the squeeky part that makes the noise. what should i do. i kind of want to wait it out, and see if he is blocked or not. if he does start to throw up im def taking him to the e. vet. but what else is there to do. i've looked everywhere for the toy, so im 95% sure he ate it. he acts fine, like nothing happend. is there anything else to do?

Can you call the Vet you assist and just ask him/her quickly how big of a deal it is? I'm sure that since you know them personally it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Depending on how big your dog is vs. how big the toy was I wouldn't freak out. I agree that if he starts to vomit I'd take him in to the emergency Vet. Dogs can pass a lot of things. Dogs can also have a lot of things stay in their tummy without hurting them. My brother's dog (a lovely Golden Retriever) ate rocks all the time....they showed up on x-rays the dog had done for other problems. The stones *never* hurt the dog.
However, having said all of this, if you are going to worry and lose sleep over this just take him to the Vet. It's worth the money to simply hear that he'll be fine and not have to worry.
Good luck. On another note....my brother once had to feed his Doberman oil to make him vomit (by Vet's instructions) because we were playing ping pong and lost the ball. The dog chased it into the other room. We searched for an hour, moving furniture and the whole bit. We couldn't find the ball so we knew he ate it. That was at Christmastime. The following June when I painted the room I found the ping pong ball under the couch. We made that poor dog suffer throwing up all night long....and the ball never came out of him because it had never gone in. That was a six month mystery for us.

Make sure your dog is drinking water AND peeing normally. Also, did he eat his next meal? Did he have a normal bowel movement afterwards? If he doesn't pee for more than 8 hours, take him to emergency. They go fast from not peeing. If he doesn't go "#2" then take him in. In the meantime, if you're an assistant, press GENTLY down his tummy and see if he's tender anywhere. If he jumps up or yelps, then he's probably got the blockage. "MOST" of the time "MOST" dogs will pass amazing things they've eaten in their poop. Yours most probably will if the squeaky got down his throat without any problem.
Is he breathing normally? See if he's struggling to get a breath or not?
I think most vets would just take an x-ray and if they don't see any "emergency" issue, they'll tell you to wait and see if he passes it all. Your poor mom must feel awful so be sure NOT to be too mean! This happens to all puppies and she was just trying to give it something it likes to play with!
I hope it all passes through! If it doesn't in the next poop or two, then you should get him checked out! Good luck!

Well having talked to vets about this several times (my dog wasn't a quick learner =/). They always told me the same things, unless it was metal or hard plastic, wait and see if it comes back up. If it doesn't, monitor food and water intake and as long as the dog is eating and drinking/pooing and peeing you should be fine. Remember, most all dog toys are non-toxic and fully digestable even though they're really not meant to be eaten.
If it is metal or hard plastic, see a vet immediately!!!
And I wasn't told this but you may want to see a vet if he ate a bunch of that synthetic fluff, they can't digest that almost at all and if your pup ate that and didn't throw it up it can be a concern.

I saw on animal planet cops a ferret that swallowed a toy they gave alot of canned pumpkin (because of its fiber) every half hour or so and checked the feces to see if it came out, which it all eventually did by the next day, but they checked it with an x-ray to make sure.
One of my cats swallowed plastic styrofoam darts, and she was hospitalized but thankfully they didnt have to operate, she got it all out on her own too. But she needed IV fluids. Her x-rays showed a belly full of food so there was blockage for a couple days.
I'm guessing your dog will have diarrhea. My puppy loves squeaker toys, but her mission is to get the squeaker out, even the ones that say durable, she rips apart as soon as she gets it.
Someone on here gave a great website
http://www.planetdog.com
has toys that are rated for how strong they are

Yes kong is known for being one of the best and durable dog toys. Some advice is to get the toys according to color, black is the toughest and most durable (I recommend for you) while red is the easiest, and all the other colors are in between. I would also suggest a plush toy that was designed for children, in my experience those are actually better than plush dog toys.

You really should go ahead and go to the vet so they can do an x-ray and make sure it's being digested correctly and if not then they can take action and get it out of him as soon as possible. You shouldn't risk an intestinal blockage so go to the vet.

You know the safest thing is go a head and take him now and do a xray and see where the toy is and then the vet will know if they feel it can pass or not

My best non vet advise: keep an eye on the dog, if he doesn't show any signs of distress then as they say,"this too shall pass"
And of course as a vet assistant you have asked your boss his opinion, right?

I would make the dog vomit before it gets into the intestine. Pour about 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide down the dog's throat and bring her outside before she pukes in the house. If the plastic is not in her system it can't cause a blockage.
